Paul Dunbar (10-3) vs. Louisville Trinity (9-4) November 28, 2003
Paul Dunbar hopes to avenge a 49-7 loss to Trinity in the semifinals last year. The Bulldogs must stop Trinity QB Brian Brohm who completed 13 of 17 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns in their last meeting. Brohm also picked up 50 yards on the ground. Coach Fred Barnott's Dunbar squad has benefitted from exccellent line play. The huge and athletic offensive and defensive line includes 6-3 201 pound Sr. Daniel Doss, 6-2 300 pound Sr. Austin Asher, 6-4 265 pound Sr. Blake Slates, 6-0 290 pound Sr. Zach Brewer, 5-11 275 pound Jr. Andrew Fogg, 6-2 310 pound Sr. Aaron Hundley, and 6-2 225 pound Jr. Tyler Bailey. RB Bobby Vyverberg has led the ground attack with 1735 yards and 16 touchdowns, while QB Davis Stanley has passed for 1132 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Coach Bob Beatty's Trinity Shamrocks started the season ranked No. 1 but lost their first four games. They have won nine consecutive victories, regained the No. 1 position, and need two more victories to claim their third consecutive state championship. QB Brian Brohm has thrown for 10,152 yards and 116 touchdowns in a brilliant career.
Trinity battled cold, blowing snow, and a muddy playing surface to defeat a determined Dunbar team by a score of 25-13. Dunbar utilized a punishing ground attack led by Bobby Vyverberg but Trinity made the big stops when the game was on the line. Trinity took an 11-0 lead after the first quarter but Dunbar pulled within five, 11-6, on a one yard run by Bobby Vyverberg. Dunbar's Steve Ramirez intercepted a Brohm pass at the Trinity 45 yard line. Dunbar drove the ball to the Trinity one yard line but on fourth and goal Vyverberg was stopped. Brohm led the Shamrocks on a 98 yard scoring drive which ended with a five yard scoring strike from Brohm to Donald Barnett, making the score 18-6.
Dunbar scored on a Davis Stanley one yard run in the third quarter to make the score 18-13. Dunbar drove to the Trinity nine yard line on their next possession. The drive stalled and Dunbar came up empty as they missed a 23 yard field goal attempt. Trinity scored an insurance TD in the fourth quarter on a 24 yard TD pass from Brohm to Steve Orndorff.
Trinity held a 361-251 yard advantage in total offense. QB Brian Brohm completed 14 of 25 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Billy Murray had five receptions for 63 yards. Donald Barnett carried the ball 21 times for 98 yards and a score. Matt Brady led the Trinity defense with nine solo and one assisted tackle. Glen Neblett added eight solo and two assisted tackles. Bobby Vyverberg led the Dunbar ground game with 177 yards and a TD on 35 carries. Ryan Combs and Drew Roberts led the Dunbar defense with eight and seven solo tackles respectively.
