Scott County (5-3) vs. Paul L. Dunbar (6-2) October 24, 2003

Early in the season many people thought this game would decide the district championship.  However, Scott County is coming off a 42-21 loss to Tates Creek and also has a loss to Henry Clay, which leaves the Cardinals with a 2-2 district slate.  Dunbar is 3-1 in district play but they dropped a 20-10 decision to Henry Clay last week.

Scott County needs to bounce back this week on both offense and defense.  The offense has been led by a stable of running backs spearheaded by the effort of Ted Sberna.  The Cardinals also get capable senior leadership in QB Chris Cronin.  The defense gave up 42 points last week but the offense had four turnovers, keeping the defense on the field for long periods of time.

Paul Dunbar hopes to get back on track this week behind RB Bobby Vyverberg, who has rushed for 908 yards and eight touchdowns on 134 carries this season.  The Bulldog defense has only given up 33 points in the second half through eight games but 17 of those points were in the second half last week in the loss to Henry Clay.

Scott County took advantage of a 21-0 first quarter burst and Dunbar turnovers on their way to a 28-14 victory over the Bulldogs tonight.  C. T. Trumbo got Scott County off to a quick start as he returned the opening kickoff 67 yards to the Dunbar 17 yard line.  Chris Cronin later scord on a one yard run to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead.  Dunbar fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Scott County took over on the Dunbar 26 yard line.  Ted Sberna scored three plays later on a three yard run to give Scott County a 14-0 advantage.  Scott County recovered another fumble on the Dunbar 11 yard line with 3:43 remaining in the quarter.  Chris Cronin threw a 10 yard TD pass to Kyle Tucker two plays later to allow the Cardinals a 21-0 advantage.

Dunbar outscored Scott County 14-7 the rest of the way, but the damage had been done and Scott County rebounded from their defeat last week while Dunbar dropped their second consecutive district loss.  Scott County held a 238-234 edge in total offense but the old turnover bugaboo hurt Dunbar as they lost three fumbles and had a pass intercepted.  Penalties were almost even as Dunbar was guilty of five infractions for 46 yards while Scott County was flagged four times for 40 yards.

Scott County was led by Ted Sberna with 84 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.  QB Chris Cronin completed four of eight passes for 66 yards and one touchdown.  The defense was also led by Sberna, who recorded nine solo and four assisted tackles.  Dunbar was led by Bobby Vyverberg who gained 125 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries.  QB Davis Stanley completed 5 of 11 passes for 41 yards and had one pass intercepted.
