Boyle County (0-1) vs. Henry Clay (0-1) August 27, 2004
Boyle County opened their season with a 43-42 loss to Lexington Catholic, a game in which the Rebels' defense gave up 440 yards of offense and six touchdowns. QB Brandon Smith put up some nice numbers as he passed for 186 yards and a TD. Smith also gained 136 yards and scored three TDs on the ground. Boyle County has three decisive victories over Henry Clay in the past three years, outscoring the Blue Devils 113-7.
Henry Clay's defense gave up too many "big" plays last week in a 29-13 loss to Paducah Tilghman on the road. QB Salin Simpson passed for 262 yards and a score last week and RB Rod Johnson, who missed last week's game, will be available for tonight's game.
Boyle County held a 513-305 edge in total offense and defeated Henry Clay 45-21. The Rebels rolled to a 26-6 halftime lead. Henry Clay trailed 38-21 entering the final period but Boyle County added and insurance TD in the final period to close out the scoring. Both teams moved the ball well on offense as both defenses gave up several big plays. The officials were busy tonight as Boyle County was penalized 13 times for 95 yards while Henry Clay was flagged 10 times for 79 yards. Possession time was fairly even as Boyle County had the ball for 25:01 while Henry Clay was on offense for 22:59.
Brandon Smith led Boyle County tonight by completing 15 of 26 passes for 314 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. Smith also carried the ball for 64 yards and a score on six carries. Quinn Givhan led the ground attack with 116 yards and a TD on 20 rushing attempts. Smith spread out his pass completions with six receivers catching at least two passes. Phillip Dean led the Rebel defense with seven solo and three assisted tackles.
Henry Clay QB Salin Simpson completed 14 of 35 passes for 99 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Simpson also led the Blue Devils on the ground with 98 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Rod Johnson carried the ball 13 times for 83 yards. Cameron Henzman led the Henry Clay defense with five solo and two assisted tackles.
