Lafayette (6-4) vs. South Laurel (8-2) November 4, 2005
Lafayette coach Mark Harmon has got excellent play from sopy QB Logan Bunch the last two weeks as he has thrown for 547 yards with five touchdown strikes over that period. Enrique Shaw has returned from an elbow injury and has big play capability. The ground game has been led by DeMario Richardson.
Coach Jep Irwins South Laurel Cardinals are undefeated at home this season The high-octane offense has been led by Fr. QB Rick Bowling who has completed 192 of 287 passes for 2247 yards with 23 touchdowns. WR Zach Marcum returns from a knee injury and has 31 receptions for 678 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
South Laurel broke a jinx tonight as they defeated a Lexington school (Lafayette) 40-28 in an opening round playoff game. The Cardinals have been eliminated the last five times they had been in a playoff by a Lexington school. South Laurel utilized a high-octane offense (461 yards) and an opportunistic defense (three fumble recoveries) to claim the victory. Lafayette took a 21-20 lead on a three yard run by DeMario Richardson with 7:46 remaining in the third quarter. South Laurel rallied to score three touchdowns on consecutive possessions to take control of the game.
South Laurel took the ensuing kickoff after losing the lead and drove 63 yards on six plays to take a 26-21 lead on a 28 yard pass from Rick Bowling to Josh Riley. South Laurel's Justin Feltner recovered a Lafayette fumble at the South Laurel 45 on the following series. The Cardinals capitalized on the mistake and took a 34-21 lead on a Cody Quinn eight yard run and a two point conversion. South Laurel took over on downs on the Lafayette 25 and scored on a five yard TD pass from Rick Bowling to Zach Marcum to make the score 40-21. Lafayette managed a late TD to cut the deficit to 40-28.
South Laurel held a 461-261 advantage in total offense and a 24-14 margin in first downs. South Laurel held a 31:29-16:31 advantage in clock possession and ran more plays (78-57) than Lafayette. The Cardinals had one pass intercepted and were penalized 10 times for 64 yards. Lafayette lost three fumbles and was flagged six times for 49 yards.
Cody Quinn led South Laurel's ground game with 130 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries while Cory Brown added 64 yards on 12 carries. Rick Bowling completed 32 of 41 passes for 270 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. Cory Brown had 12 receptions for 99 yards while Zach Marcum added nine receptions for 99 yards and four touchdowns. Jeff Ledford led the defense with five solo and two assisted tackles while Kevin Barnes added four solo and two assisted tackles. Donovan Durham recorded three solo and one assisted tackles with 3.5 tackles for losses totalling 13 yards, one pass breakup, and a fumble recovery.
Enrique Shaw led the Lafayette ground game with 77 yards and a TD on four carries. Logan Bunch completed 14 of 31 passes for 116 yards with one TD. Enrique Shaw caught seven passes for 57 yards. Jared Leedy led the General defense with eight solo and four assisted tackles. Scott Bodkin recorded nine solo and one assisted tackles with two tackles for losses totalling 12 yards. Bodkin also intercepted one pass.
