Lexington Catholic (1-1) vs. Scott County (1-1) September 9, 2005
Lexington Catholic defeated Scott County 49-42 in an overtime thriller in which the Knights were forced to make a big defensive stand to secure the victory. A pass interference in overtime on a 3rd and 10 call gave Lexington Catholic a first and goal on the Scott County 5 yard line. Shane Israel then scored on a five yard run and a Brian Behr conversion kick gave Lexington Catholic a 49-42 lead. Scott County took over on the 10 yard line and could only manage a total of one yard on three rushing plays. QB Cody Andrews was sacked on a 4th and nine play by Winston Guy to end Scott County's chance to score.
There were several games within the game tonight. Scott County's punishing ground game gave them a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. Lexington Catholic took advantage of Scott County miscues and the strong throwing arm of Justin Burke to lead the Knights to a 21-14 halftime lead.
Scott County quickly rallied in the third quarter to take a 28-21 lead before Lexington Catholic came back to tie the game 28-28 after three quarters. Lexington Catholic took a 42-34 lead late in the fourth quarter but on the ensuing kickoff, Scott County 's Rodney Haddix electrified the home crowd with a 94 yard return to the Lexington Catholic three yard line. Cody Andrews scored on a one yard run and tied the game at 42 on an Andrews to Jimmie Warren two point conversion pass. Neither team could score again in regulation and the issue was settled in overtime.
Lexington Catholic held a slim 357-327 yard advantage in total offense but Scott County ran 70 plays compared to Lexington Catholic's 40 plays and held a 34:06-13:54 advantage in possession time. Scott County lost two fumbles and had a pass intercepted while Lexington Catholic lost one fumble. Lexington Catholic was penalized 11 times for 86 yards while Scott County was flagged five times for 47 yards.
Justin Burke led Lexington Catholic's aerial attack by completing 14 of 26 passes for 339 yards and six touchdown passes. Wes Caldwell caught six passes for 156 yards with scoring receptions of 29, 20, 40, and 58 yards. Cornell Burbage had five receptions for 69 yards and a TD, and Shane Israel added two catches for 85 yards including a 46 yard scoring reception. Justin Burke also punted three times for a 50.7 yard average with a long punt of 61 yards. Davis Page led the Knight defense with six solo and nine assisted tackles, while Jacob Locknane chipped in with one solo and 12 assisted tackles. Zack Jeter contributed one solo and 10 assisted tackles.
Jimmie Warren led the Scott County ground game with 125 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. Keith Garrett added 70 yards and a TD on 18 carries and Mike Sberna chipped in with 61 yards on 10 carries. Cody Andrews completed four of eight passes for 42 yards with one TD pass and one interception. Rodney Haddix had a 21 yard TD reception and returned three kickoffs for 151 yards. Keith Smith led the Cardinal defense with one solo and six assisted tackles while Samuel Payne added one solo and five assisted tackles.
