Introduction
Four quality football programs will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on the beautiful synthetic turf at Joseph K. Ford Stadium.
Game One will pit 3A school Franklin County against 2A power Breathitt County. Coach Donny Walker's Franklin County Flyers finished 6-5 last season and return an explosive spread offense that can put up points in a hurry. 6-1 185 pound Jr. QB Kaelin Ammons threw for over 2,000 yards last season and connected for 25 touchdowns. He also ran for almost 1,000 yards and scored for 11 touchdowns. He has a bevy of good receivers including 6-0 170 pound Sr. Colton Riggs who also stars as a defensive back. 5-11 175 pound Sr. Shane McDonald is also one of his "go to" receivers.
The Breathitt County Bobcats, coached by Mike Holcomb, finished 11-1 last season and have captured three state championships. The Bobcats lost a lot of players through graduation and although they will be rebuilding, should field a competitive team. They should be led by speedy RB 5-8 170 pound Sr. Todd Robinson.
Game Two will match Class A Lexington Christian Academy against the 3A Lexington Catholic. Coach Paul Rains has LCA on the move as they finished 8-3 last season and return a lot of offensive firepower. 6-1 210 pound Sr. QB Garrie Krueger passed for 1995 yards and 25 touchdowns last year and ran for 350 yards and eight scores. 5-9 190 pound Sr. RB Tyrell Hayden ran for 811 yards and 15 touchdowns. 6-5 210 pound Sr. WR Andre Henderson caught 29 passes for 700 yards and 12 TDs. The Eagles will be without 6-1 208 pound Sr. RB/LB Jordan Kite who had knee surgery but hopefully will be back by mid-season. The line will be anchored this season by 6-2 280 pound Sr. Alex Riddle.
Coach Bob Sphire's Lexington Catholic Knights finished 10-2 last season and despite an inexperienced offensive and defensive line return a lot of offensive firepower, led by 6-3 191 pound Sr. QB Justin Burke. Burke has thrown for close to 5000 yards and connected for 58 TDs during a stellar career. Burke also has the ability to run as he gained 419 yards and scored seven TDs last season. 5-11 185 pound Sr. WR Cornell Burbage caught 29 passes for 541 yards and six TDs last season. Burbage also returned 11 kickoffs for 277 yards and a score and returned eight punts for 335 yards and two touchdowns. 6-1 163 pound Jr. WR Wes Caldwell also caught 27 passes for 486 yards and eight TDs. 6-0 220 pound Sr. A. J. Neltner is expected to anchor the offensive line.
