Woodford County (4-1) vs. Henry Clay (6-0) September 30, 2005
*Henry Clay is playing their home games at Tates Creek High School until construction is completed on their new stadium.
Henry Clay remained undefeated as they defeated Woodford County 39-33 in an overtime thriller. The Blue Devils led 27-20 entering the final quarter but 5-10 145 pound Fr. Shawne Lewis electrified the crowd with a 92 yard punt return to pull Woodford County within one, 27-26, with 5:36 remaining in the game. The Yellowjackets failed on a two point conversion attempt. Henry Clay fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Woodford County recovered at the Henry Clay 31 yard line. The Yellowjackets were unable to get a first down and missed a 42 yard field goal attempt.
Henry Clay went on an 80 yard drive capped by a one yard TD run by Rod Johnson. The conversion kick failed and the Blue Devils led 33-26 with 1:55 remaining in the game. Woodford County answered with their own 80 yard TD drive ending with a 17 yard scoring pass from Trenton Fields to Kienan Franklin. Kenny Spach kicked the extra point and the score was tied 33-33 with 1:00 left on the clock.
Woodford County got the ball first in overtime. On third-and-goal from the Henry Clay 10 yard line, Trenton Fields rifled a completed pass to Jamaal Pickens in the end zone but Fields was ruled down before he released the ball. Kenny Spach missed a 35 yard field goal and the ball went over to Henry Clay. Chase Minnifield ran in for a 10 yard score and the winning TD on their first play from scrimmage.
Henry Clay held a 427-321 margin on total offense. The Blue Devils ost three fumbles and were penalized 10 times for 71 yards. Woodford County was flagged eight times for 65 yards.
Chase Minnifield led the Henry Clay ground game with 92 yards and two touchdowns on four carries while Rod Johnson added 80 yards and three scores on 18 carries. Salin Simpson chipped in with 65 yards on 13 carries. Simpson also completed 12 of 19 passes for 158 yards with a touchdown. Clark Jeter caught four passes for 74 yards. Aaron Boyd and Sam Gardner each caught three passes for 25 and 17 yards respectively. 5-11 275 pound Sr. Jermaine Buch led the defense with five solo and three assisted tackles with five of the tackles being for losses totalling 27 yards. 6-2 220 pound Sr. Case Allin added three solo and six assisted tackles.
Kienan Franklin led the Woodford County ground game with 117 yards on 23 carries. Trenton Fields completed 11 of 20 passes for 185 yards with three touchdown passes. Nathan Courtney caught five passes for 109 yards. Shawne Lewis had a very productive night as he caught two passes for 22 yards with a touchdown, returned a punt 92 yards for a score, returned a kickoff 24 yards, and had five solo and two assisted tackles. 6-2 225 pound Sr. Derek Fraught led the defense with four solo and eight assisted tackles, and 6-0 198 pound So. Wayne Hanley added four solo and six assisted tackles.
