Henry Clay (4-0) vs. Scott County (2-1) September 15, 2006
Coach Sam Simpson's Henry Clay Blue Devils have averaged over 50 ppg in four victories this season. The high octane offese has been led by QB Ryan Phillippi, who has thrown for 679 yards and 10 TDs and is also a threat on the ground. Phillippi has spread the wealth around to a fine trio of receivers: Clark Jeter (24 receptions for 276 yards), Chase Minnifield (18 receptions for 225 yards), and Aaron Boyd (16 catches for 198 yards). Dontey Gay has gained 282 yards on the ground.
Coach Jim McKee's Scott County Cardinals lost to Lexington Catholic 43-36 and are also capable of lighting up the scoreboard. RB Keith Smith has led the ground attack with 286 yards. QB Cody Andrews has passed for 257 yards and his favorite target has been Jimmie Warren.
Henry Clay's WR Clark Jeter concluded a great evening with a 19 yard scoring reception with 1:24 remaining in the game to tie the score at 42-42 and Chase Minnifield kicked the extra point to give the Blue Devils a 43-42 victory. Jeter had 10 receptions for 209 yards and five touchdowns for the game.
This was a game of "runs" as the score was tied 21-21 at the end of the first quarter. Henry Clay scored 15 unanswered points in the second quarter to lead 36-21 at halftime. Scott County scored three unanswered TDs in the second half to take a 42-36 lead with 3:01 left in the game. Henry Clay started what proved to be the winning drive from their own 36 yard line. The key play was third-and-10 from the Henry Clay 46 when Ryan Phillippi hit Aaron Boyd with a pass that he carried 31 yards to the Scott County 23. Two plays later,Phillippi hit Jeter over the middle with a 19 yard scoring strike. Scott County had one last chance but their drive ended with a fumble on the Scott County 39.
Henry Clay recorded 19 first downs and 414 yards of total offense. The Blue Devils lost one fumble and were penalized six times for 49 yards. Scott County recorded 17 first downs and 363 yards of total offense. The The Cardinals lost three fumbles and were penalized six times for 33 yards.
Ryan Phillippi led the Henry Clay ground game with 70 yards and a TD. Dontey Gay added 52 yards on 11 carries. Phillippi completed 22 of 33 passes for 316 yards with five touchdowns. Clark Jeter had 10 receptions for 209 yards and five TDs. Aaron Boyd had six catches for 72 yards. Brendan Kelly led the defense with six solo and four assisted tackles. Stephon Burton added five solo and four assisted tackles.
Logan Travis led ed the Scott County ground game with 93 yards and a TD on three carries. Keith Smith added 76 yards and two TDs on 14 carries. Jimmie Warren added 69 yards on seven carries. Brandon Lawson only carried the ball three times but gained 32 yards and scored two TDs. Cody Andrews completed four of nine passes for 60 yards and a TD. Keith Garrett had a 38 yard scoring reception. Zack King led the Cardinal defense with seven solo and eight assisted tackles including 3.5 tackles for losses totalling eight yards. Jason Rusch added three solo and five assisted tackles including three QB sacks for losses totalling 33 yards.
