Bryan Station (11-1) vs. Louisville Trinity (11-1)  November 19, 1999

John Nochta's Bryan Station's triple option attack brings explosive speed to this match-up.  TB Eric Shelton  has rushed for 1852 yards for the season.  QB J.T. Haskins added 1361 yards on the ground, and FB Greg Shiddell  chipped in with  618 yards.   Haskins has also passed for 960 yards and 12 touchdowns.  They also have had the luxury of running behind a very good offensive line.

Coach Kevin Wright brings tradition and pride with the 12-time state champion Trinity Shamrocks.  Trinity operates a wing-T offense led by QB Troy Thomas who has thrown for 1100 yards.  The Shamrocks would prefer to rely on a strong ground attack led by FB Vince Phillips and HB Maurice Rivers.

Bryan Station used the considerable skills of 6-3 236 pound junior tailback Eric Shelton who rushed for 229 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Defenders to a 31-21 victory.  Bryan Station executed their high risk option offense well, considering the rainy weather conditions.

Trinity appeared to catch a break late in the second quarter.  Trailing 14-0, they blocked a Bryan Station punt and recovered the ball at the Bryan Station 37.  However, Bryan Station's linebacker Darrell Brooks intercepted a deflected Troy Thomas pass and rambled 58 yards to the Trinity 15 yard line.  Ryan Pearl then kicked a 32 yard field goal to give Bryan Station a 17-0 halftime lead.

Trinity refused to give up and went to their passing attack in the third quarter.  Thomas passed for three touchdowns in the third quarter; 14 and 36 yard scoring strikes to Erik Brown and a 5 yard toss to Antonio Veals.  Bryan Station answered the first touchdown pass with a J.T. Haskins 18 yard scoring run.  They responded to the second touchdown  pass with a Robert Haskins 93 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  The score was Bryan Station up 31-21 at the end of three quarters.

Bryan Station had interceptions by J.T. Haskins and Marquis Johnson and recovered a fumble to keep the score at 31-21 and preserve a hard-fought victory.  Bryan Station will now advance to the state 4A semi-finals to meet Tates Creek, who handed them their only loss of the year.  Louisville Trinity finished the season 11-2 and their future looks extremely bright.  They have a young team, a talented coaching staff, and all the pride and tradition necessary to improve on their 12-time state champion number.
