Class 2A Championship
Boyle County (14-0) vs. Glasgow (11-3) December 3, 1999
The senior leadership of TE/LB Bobby Leffew, OL Brandon Clem and DL Greg Wilson, have led Coach Chuck Smith's Boyle County Rebels to a 14-0 slate, including two victories over a tough Lexington Catholic squad. Sophomore Jeff Duggins has tallied 2180 passing yards and 38 scoring strikes and added 392 yards and five rushing touchdowns. Junior running back Matt Quinn has powered the ground game with 1523 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Coach Jerry Eubank brings a quick and aggressive Glasgow team to the championship game, but they will probably be the underdog against the undefeated Rebels. Randy and Bradley Depp have each rushed for over 800 yards this year and Casey Calhoun has passed for over 1000 yards. Glasgow has allowed just 26 points in four playoff games.
Boyle County proved to be too tough and aggressive for the speedy Glasgow team and secured their first championship with a 29-6 victory. The Boyle County offense was not firing on all cylinders but they took advantage of fumbles and a blocked field goal attempt to score. Matt Quinn and Bobby Leffew led an aggressive defense that limited Glasgow to only 57 rushing yards. Boyle County now has their bragging rights; until now, they had languished in the shadow of seven-time state champion Danville. Boyle County finished the year 15-0 and remains the only undefeated team in the state.

Ft. Thomas Highlands (13-1) vs. Owensboro (13-1) December 4, 1999
Highlands lost quarterback Jared Lorenzen and TE Derek Smith to the University of Kentucky from last year's 15-0 championship squad and the young Bluebirds were supposed to be re-building. Somebody forgot to tell Coach Dale Mueller and his 18 underclassmen starters as they have rolled back into Louisville with a 13-1 record. Junior quarterback Gino Guidugli has passed for 2901 yards and 38 scoring strikes. Junior flanker Brett Hamblen caught 17 scoring receptions and 1302 total receiving yards. Senior Brenden Zenni rushed for 1408 yards and 26 touchdowns. Juniors Brent Grover and Brett Hamblen anchor the Highland defense.
Owensboro's coach Gordon Power sticks to power football and his ground game is led by 6-2 Getty Cavitt who has rushed for 1445 yards and has also racked up 133 tackles at linebacker. Another top Red Devil player is 6-5 280 pound end Buster Ashley.
Highlands will be the favorite in this game as their only loss has been to out-of-state foe Cincinnati Elder. Highlands has claimed 13 previous state titles and Owensboro has a 2A and 3A championship to their credit.
Highlands' Brett Hamblen returned the opening kickoff 91 yards
to give the Bluebirds a 7-0 lead and they dominated Owensboro to capture
their third championship in four years. Highlands only had 301 yards
total offense but their opportunistic defense held Owensboro to 175 offensive
yards and forced six turnovers. Highlands led 21-7 at halftime thanks
to a goal line stand at the Highlands 2 yard line as time expired in the
first half. Highlands scored three times in the third quarter including
two touchdowns by the defense on the way to a 48-10 victory.

St. Xavier, trailing 31-28 and fourth and inches from the goal line in overtime, gave the ball to Ryan Payne who scored to give St. X their fourth title of this decade by a score of 34-31. St. Xavier had to score with 1:14 left in regulation to tie the game 28-all and get into overtime. Ryan Pearl kicked a 24 yard field goal in overtime for Bryan Station giving them a 31-28 lead, and setting the stage for Payne's heroics. St. X had to overcome the heroics of Eric Shelton who rushed for 213 yards and a great performance by J.T. Haskins. There were truly no losers in this game as both teams fired their best shots but in the end St. Xavier's superior depth finally won. LB Justin Haydock was the hero on defense for St. Xavier with 18 tackles.
