Tates Creek (0-0) vs. Henry Clay (0-0) August 20, 1999
Both coaches tried to downplay the importance of this opening game because the teams are no longer in the same region. However, whenever Henry Clay and Tates Creek collide it is always a big game. Tates Creek has defeated Henry Clay the last six times they played and outscored them 62-13 in their two meetings last year. Henry Clay's coach Sam Simpson will field an explosive team led by QB Shane Boyd who threw for 2700 yards and ran for 1100 yards in 1998. Boyd's favorite targets should be WR Zia Combs and TE Joe Deifel. Josh Blakey, a 6-5 287 Sr. defensive lineman will also be a key returnee.
Tates Creek, directed by coach Joe Ruddell, comes off a 14-1 season and lost to Louisville Male in the Class 4A finals last year. The key returnee for Tates Creek is RB Mian Smith who rushed for 1899 yards and 30 TDs last year. Ruddell has lost several key players on defense and will be tested tonight by Henry Clay's explosive offense. Another key loss to graduation was 250 pound FB/DL Anthony Jones who was a tough inside runner as well as a key blocker for Mian Smith.
This game, for all purposes, was over within the first two minutes. Boyd hit Combs with a 6 yard scoring strike and then Combs recovered a fumble and ran 10 yards for a TD to make the score 12-0 with 10:57 to go in the first quarter. The Blue Devils defense was responsible for five Tates Creek turnovers. They only had two lapses all night, one a Greg Baltimore 71 yard TD run and a short screen pass caught by Mian Smith who streaked 95 yards for the score.
Henry Clay had a 398-317 margin in total offense and held Mian Smith to 44 yards in 11 rushes. Greg Baltimore led the Tates Creek ground game with 110 yards in 7 carries. Henry Clay's highly touted QB Shane Boyd completed 16 of 32 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He also ran for 78 yards on 6 carries and scored on a 69 yard TD run. Zia Combs caught 6 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown reception. This game was witnessed by approximately 5,000 fans. Henry Clay definitely established themselves as a force to be reckoned with and Tates Creek will be a very good team by the end of the season.
