FIRST SETTLERS OF OWSLEY COUNTY, ONCE PART OF CLAY COUNTY. ?? Moore and his wife Ellender Hamilton, and their family have generally been known as the first settlers of Owsley County, Kentucky. They migrated out of Virginia to Madison County, Kentucky and left Flint Creek, for the South Fork of the Kentucky River near Booneville. Cornelious Brown SR and Family were in Shenandoah County Virginia area, before they left for Wilkes County, North Carolina and was in what is now the Carter County Area of Tennessee from about 1781-1795, when they moved to Muddy Creek. They migrated slowly from Muddy Creek to the South Fork of the Kentucky River from 1785-1813. Old Preacher Indian-Fighter, Joseph Proctor, was an early settler on what is now the Dave Turner Farm about one mile down river from Booneville. He moved to the place bearing his name, Proctor, Kentucky, and died December 2, 1844 at the age of 89 in Boone Kentucky. ?? Gabbard Sr and wife, Margret Smith, were in the Traveller's rest area contempary with Henry Gabbard and wife Barbara Hunsucker,who entered land on Indian Creek, what is now part of Clay County that became part of Owlsey County, Kentucky entry made in 1817. Samuel Woods Sr, a Revolutionary War Soldier, who is often confused with his son Samuel Woods Jr, came to what is now Owsley County very early. He died in that part of Clay County that is now Owsley County Kentucky on December 13, 1825. "Rinty" Baker lived in a rock house (under a cliff) one mile above the mouth of Buffalo Creek in that part of Clay County that may have become Owsley County, It appears the Samuel Woods Family, and John Abner Sr, were in what is now Owlsey County. Edward Evans and wife Margret entered land on Buck Creek, probably between Sag & Booneville, Kentucky in 1804. Edward and Margret are the progenitors of the Evans in the Owlsey County Area.
