The Turner & Eldridge Family

Genealogy has recently become one of my main interests. Delving back into the past to find the names and places of our ancestors is both exciting and also educational. More detailed researching becomes fascinating when dates can put families into a special part of history. To read of the local customs and historical facts of a particular time frame gives new light to our research. For example - what they wore - what and sometimes, why they moved away from a particular area etc. So often people coming to Appalachia were travelling under the most dreadful conditions only to find life here was full of hardship. The way in which so many of these families adapted and carved out a life for themselves, their families and ultimately future generations is one of the special benefits found for the family history researcher. My Turner ancestors are listed on this site.

Standing left to right are: Nancy Turner, Louanna Scott Turner, Dave Turner (holding Walter Turner), Harrison Turner (holding Geneveve Turner) and Mary Delle Turner.

Left to right are: Bill Turner (infant), Fanny Turner, Ailene Turner and Dave Turner. 2nd Row: Carl Turner. Back Row: Ransom Turner, Ethel Turner and Walter Turner.

Isaiah had two families. His first wife Mary Miles was my great grandmother. During this marriage, Mary bore my grandfather Dave Turner in 1898. If anyone has ANY information on Mary Miles please email me. I've not been able to find her grave or any information on her.
Dave married Louanna Scott from Cumberland and they were parents to my father, Walter Turner who was born March 10, 1923. Louanna died on Sept 8, 1931 at the age of 30 of appendicitis, and Dave later remarried to Fanny Eldridge (who by the way was my widowed grandmother on my mothers side of the family.) Dave died in April 1963 of congestive heart failure at the age of 65, and was buried in Maggard Cemetery at Partridge in Letcher County.

Isaiah later married to Nannie Belle Scott of Cumberland following Mary's demise.

Ira Eldridge
Ira Eldridge my Grandfather
My maternal line is from the Eldridge family on Kings Creek in Letcher County Kentucky. My grandfather Ira Eldridge was brutally murdered on April 28, 1934 near the head of Kings Creek. An old man named Joe Creech hid behind a school house and shot him in the back as he was walking out of the hollow. I have some newspaper clippings of the incident and trial HERE.
My mother was raised by her aunt "Ozine Sturgill". She was my "Granny Zine". I recently located her old homeplace in Virginia. Click HERE to read the story.
Some of the other surnames I will be researching are:Creech; Scott, Fields, Miles and Maggard.

You can take a look at my PHOTO ALBUM if you like. If you have any information on the above names or know of anyone who has anything at all pertaining to the families listed, please contact me.
