Bruce Johnston left the band shortly after the release of Surf's Up and in his place were recruited Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar, formerly of the Carl Wilson-produced group Flame. This album is generally regarded by fans as inferior to those immediately preceding it, but this is probably more to do with the strange marketing decision to package it as a double album with Pet Sounds than with any actual fault in the album itself. The album contains All This Is That, often considered the best non-Brian song the band ever did, and is far more R&B-oriented than previous albums.
