Jessica sat alone in the cell of an old, abandoned prison. The moonlight shone through the bars of her window, casting light on the patch of ground in front of her. The cold, night air coming through the window caused her to shiver. Tears trickled down Jessica's face as she thought of her present situation.
Jessica had been kidnapped by a guy named Kevin, who blamed her for his brother's death. Her boyfriend had betrayed her and helped Kevin to kidnap her. They had even killed Jessica's best friends to get revenge on her. One had been pushed head first off a building; the other shot by an uzi. Jessica would die next.
The only good thing about all this, Jessica thought, was that Mike was no longer around. He had been her first boyfriend, the only guy she'd ever truly loved. He had been forced to move to Florida with his family years ago. Jessica knew if he hadn't, Kevin probably would have killed him by now. Though if he hadn't moved, she never would have gone out with that jerk who'd betrayed her, Ryan. She just wished she could see Mike one last time before they killed her.
Jessica heard the door that connected this part of the jail to the main room creak open. She wondered whether it was Ryan or Kevin. Maybe they were planning to kill her right now. To her surprise, it was neither of them.
"Mike!" Jessi softly exclaimed. Even though it had been years since she'd seen him, Jessica recognized him immediately. Strands of his tousled brown hair fell loosely on the sides of his face. His big brown eyes shone with love and fear.
"Jessica!" he whispered. "I've got to get you out of there. Where are the keys?"
"Over there." She pointed to the key ring that hung on a nail next to the door he'd come in. Mike quickly grabbed them, holding the keys tightly in his fist so they wouldn't make noise. He silently unlocked the door to Jessica's cell.
"How did you know where I was?" Jessica asked as she stepped throught the door.
"I decided to move back out here," Mike told her. "When I arrived, I discovered you'd been kidnapped. I figured this would be the best place to hold a hostage. Now let's get out of here."
Jessica nodded, and they stepped into the other room, making their way across to the door leading outside. Suddenly the room was flooded with light. Mike and Jessica froze. There stood Kevin and Ryan.
"Where do you think you're going?" Kevin asked coldly, pointing a gun at them. Jessica gulped hard, terrified. However, Mike seemed perfectly calm.
"We're leaving."
"No you're not," Ryan replied, taking a step forward.
To Jessie's surprise, Mike pulled a gun out from under his jacket. "I'm afraid I must insist," he said, aiming the gun at Ryan and Kevin.
"Where did you get that?" Jessica hissed.
"Did you think I'd come to rescue you from a pair of killers without bringing a gun?" Mike answered, still pointing the gun steadily at them. Ryan whipped out a gun of his own, giving them an advantage.
Jessica didn't know what to do. Her and Mike could both be shot dead in an instant. If she had a gun too, it would be even. Except she didn't have a gun...unless there was a way to get one of their's. But if she moved at all, they'd kill her. Of coarse, they were going to kill her anyway, so Jessie figured she had nothing to lose.
Jessica stepped forward quickly, then immediately dropped to the ground, dodging the gunshot and rolling towards Ryan. He wasn't far away from where she'd stood. Jessica rose to her feet, kneed Ryan in the crotch, then grabbed his gun as it fell from his hands. She kept it aimed at him as she returned to Mike's side.
Jessica realized another gunshot had gone off besides the one intended for her. Kevin had made a move to shoot her when she'd been attacking Ryan, so Mike had shot him in order to protect her. Ryan was furious. He grabbed Kevin's gun, aimed at Mike, and fired.
"No!" Jessica screamed. She couldn't let him kill Mike. Not even if it meant she'd die instead. Jessica leaped in front of him. The bullet hit her shoulder, and she fell to the ground.
Mike was too stunned to react. Ryan punched him in the face, then hit him over the head with a gun. Mike slumped down on the floor, unconscious.
Jessica clutched her shoulder. The fiery pain was unbearable. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ryan aim his gun at Mike's head. Jessica drew her gun and aimed. Then she hesitated briefly. After all, Ryan was her boyfriend. But, she reminded herself, he wasn't anymore. He had never even cared about her. However, Mike did. Jessica squeezed the trigger and fired.
Mike held Jessica's hand as they made their way through the cemetery. A week had passed, and they had just left the hospital. Jessica had wanted to visit the graves of her best friends, so Mike had offered to come with her.
Jessica looked down at the graves. She laid some flowers gently on top as tears streamed down her face, "Good-bye," she whispered softly, stepping back. Mike put his arm around her shoulders and together they walked away.
