During the French persecution of the Huguenots in 1752, a group of 47 Alsatians tried to escape France for Germany, but were arrested. Faced with the choice of a life of slavery and imprisonment or conversion to the Catholic religion and exile to Louisiana, the group chose life in an unknown place. The exiles arrived in New Orleans aboard the "Cameleon" on 8 Sep 1753. Included in this group were Philippe CONRAD, his wife and son and Christian JACOB, his wife, 2 sons and 4 daughters.
