Some Descendants of Jacob Roop

Jacob Roop, an Oregon pioneer of 1852, now residing on his donation claim in Clackamas county, was born in Dauphin county, PA, March 9, 1817. He is of German ancestry. The progenitor of the Roop family in America came from Germany and settled in PA. His name was John Roop. He had a brother who was killed in the war of 1812. Our subject's father, Christian Roop, was born in New Harrisburg, PA, and he and his wife, whose maiden name was Ann Brubaker, and who was a native of Halifax, PA, had a family of twelve children, of whom only three are now living. The mother died, at the age of fifty-nine years, and the father passed away, at the age of sixty.
Jacob Roop was the third born in his father's family, and when he was twelve years old removed with his parents to Toledo, OH, where they remained seven years. Their next move was to a point about sixty miles east of Chicago. From there they moved to Indiana, where the father died.
December 25, 1843, Mr. Roop married Miss Seville Groves, who was born August 10, 1821. Their union resulted in the birth of three children, as follows: John, who resides in Snake River country, in Idaho; Frances, wife of Oscar Sturgis, lives in Clackamas county; and Lonson Monson, who received injuries while a soldier in the Union army, from the effects of which he died in Oregon, December 17, 1869. Mrs. Roop died April 3, 1848. On the 24th of August, 1848, he married Miss Jane Young, and their only child, C. Y. Roop, was born August 23, 1850. His second wife died October 13, 1851.
In 1852, with his three brothers, the subject of our sketch crossed the plains to Oregon, coming direct to Clackamas county. Here he took up the donation claim on which he has since lived and prospered. His brothers took claims near him. After living alone for some years he was married July 13, 1862, to Mrs. Rachel Powell, a widow with five children. She was born April 14, 1819, and died December 24, 1890. Thus Mr. Roop was a third time bereaved of a loving companion. He has five grandchildren, one of whom, Mrs. Emily Killin, is now his housekeeper.
He has been a hardworking man all his life, and his honest industry has been rewarded with success. He has developed a fine farm, being now the owner of 240 acres of choice land, a portion of it being devoted to horticultural purposes. Mr. Roop was reared a Methodist, but since coming to Oregon has not belonged to any church. He affiliates with the Republican party.
