Don Binkley Shot and Killed In Deer Hunting Accident,

Update Jan 5,1999

While hunting on a game reserve near Farmerville, Louisiana, in Union Parish, my cousin, Don Binkley was shot and killed on opening day, October 1998. He was shot once in the neck with a 30:06 by a man in a tree stand 60 yards away. He was found within 30 minutes dead. Lying face up under his tree stand. He was on the edge of an open pipe line standing under the stand with an orange vest on when he was shot. He never heard the gun shot, because he died instantly. His mother, wife and 5 kids miss him greatly.

Wildlife officials and the Union Parish Sheriff's Department sealed off the area and took information form the hundred or so hunters signed up to hunt that day. The information included among other, the make and model of the firearms used.

The officials chopped down the tree behind Don Binkley and discovered the bullet that killed him. They matched it to a man with an alien green card living in Gonzales, Louisiana, near Baton Rouge.

Upon his arrest for involuntary manslaughter, the individual stated that he saw some brush move and fired a shot. He said he never walked over to see what fell to the ground. The trail is pending. There is inconclusive evidence to substantiate the rumor that arguments preceded the shooting.

Hunting is a fun sport. However you must be aware that you are taking your life in your own hands when you go. It wont bother you because you will be dead if someone screws up. However your wife and kids will miss you and chances are they will not be provided for when you are dead.

Attorneys for Binkley's family have stated that you cannot file suit against the state of Louisiana in this situation, even though the area was over hunted by hunters. The shooter had little or know insurance or money.

And if you are a hunter, make sure of your target. If you make a mistake, there is no way you can bring a man back to life. The expense of a trail is great. You will never get over the fact that your ignorance has ended another life. Every time you sit down to eat, you will think of those kids sitting without a father.

Some good hunting rules:

make sure of your target

never leave a gun loaded

never leave the safety off

never point a gun even accidentally at somebody unless you intend to kill them

never provoke anyone with a gun in his hands

avoid arguments when hunting, turn the other cheek

always carry a flashlight near dawn and near dusk

always wear hunting orange, even when in a tree stand, I have known of brothers shooting brothers while in a tree stand.

attend gun safety classes

never leave a kid or an inexperienced hunter alone

never trust anyone with a gun

never think a gun is unloaded

think twice before killing someone intentionally, it could screw up the rest of your life

remember that bullets made for deer hunting make big holes with lots of blood. These holes can kill, chop off legs, arms and maim someone for life. The bullets explode within the victim.
