GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALAYSIA ANNUAL GEOLOGICAL CONFERENCE 2000 Introduction The Geological Society of Malaysia is organising the 14th Annual Geological Conference at the Shangri-La Hotel, Penang from 8th to 9th September 2000. The Annual Conference has been held since 1986 and is a national event well attended by geoscientists from academia as well as the public and private sectors. With the dawning of the 21st century, it is appropriate for all geoscientists in Malaysia to reflect on past achievements and plan towards a higher level of excellence in the next millennium. One of the main challenges facing geoscientists today is the lack of knowledge about the importance of geoscience in national development among non-geoscientists, particularly policy and decision makers, as well as the general public. In view of this, the theme for the Annual Geological Conference 2000 is "Increasing the Relevance of Geoscience in the 21st Century". Several thematic papers will be presented to highlight the important contribution of geoscience in national development. In addition, a forum has been planned to discuss the conference theme. Scientific Programme The scientific programme of the Annual Geological Conference 2000 consists of a plenary session, 8 technical sessions, a forum on the conference theme, 3 field trips and a dialogue. There has been an overwhelming response to the call of papers with more than 60 papers received. To accommodate all the papers, parallel sessions as well as a poster session are planned.
