GEOLOGICAL
SOCIETY OF MALAYSIA
ANNUAL GEOLOGICAL CONFERENCE 2001
Introduction
The Geological Society of Malaysia is organising the 15th Annual Geological
Conference at the Pan Pacific Resort, Pangkor Island, Perak Darul Redzuan on
2-3 June 2001. The Annual Conference
has been held since 1986 and is well attended by geoscientists from
institutions of higher learning and government research departments, as well as
the public and private sectors. For over a century, Malaysian geoscientists
have played very important roles in the economic development of the
country. Now, as the country is
experiencing rapid development in technological and IT-based industries,
necessary steps must be taken by geoscientists to keep up with the pace of this
rapid development. In view of this, the
Annual Geological Conference 2001 has chosen the theme ÒEnhancing the
Contribution of Geoscientists in the Development of Malaysia? Several thematic papers will be presented to
highlight the important contributions of geoscientists in national
development. In addition, a forum is
also planned to discuss the conference theme.

Forum
on Enhancing the Contribution of Geoscientists in the Development of
Malaysia
The aim of the forum is to discuss various issues related to the
latest development in various disciplines of geoscience and the current requirements
by various industrial sectors.
Panelists have been invited for the following topics:
- The new role of geoscientists in petroleum
industries
- The new role of geoscientists in mining
industries
- The new role of geoscientists in the
geotechnical sector
- The new role of geoscientists in
institutions of higher learning
- The role of IGM towards recognition for the
geoscience profession
The resolution achieved in this meeting will be documented and
utilized by the Geological Society of Malaysia and the Institute of Geology
Malaysia for consideration in their future programmes. It will also be distributed to Geology Departments
in all local universities, related government agencies, as well as interested
companies and individuals.

Accommodation is at participant's own expense but reservation at
the Pan Pacific Resort has to be made through the Geological Society of
Malaysia two weeks in advance with one night deposit chargeable through Visa/Mastercard. Any cancellation should be made at least 7
days prior to the check in date. In
view that Pangkor Island is usually packed with tourist during weekends and
public holidays, early booking for any outside accommodation is strongly recommended. Please take note that the Pan Pacific Resort

the hotel guest from Lumut Jetty to the Resort jetty at RM10 per person
(returned fare). The ferry is scheduled
to leave Lumut Jetty every 11/2 hour, but for your convenience the Geological
Society of Malaysia will book alternate ferry services (at 12.15, 3.30 and 6.30
pm on 1st January 2001). To ensure that
the seat is allocated, reservation should be made through the Geological
Society of Malaysia together with the Registration Form. Ferry passengers should register at Lumut
