CLEMSON 76 GEORGIA TECH 62

TECH COULD BE OUT OF BIG DANCE AFTER LOSS TO CLEMSON

24 TURNOVERS THE DIFFERENCE IN LOSS; TECH LOSES 12TH GAME IN 13 ATTEMPTS AT LITTLE JOHN; TOURNAMENT WILL DETERMINE FATE
Georgia Tech hit another bump in the road today as it tried to impress the NCAA Selection Committee and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Once again the turnover bug caught the Jackets as they commited 24 turnovers, 7 of them by point guard Travis Spivey. Matt Harpring once again led the Jackets in scoring with 22 points and moved to within 45 points of catching Mark Price as the #2 scorer of All-Time. Dion Glover, who has been rumored to be leaving for the NBA, finished with only 11 points on 4-12 shooting. Dion should spend more time helping Tech reach the Round of 64 instead. Unlike his predecessors Kenny Anderson, and Stephon Marbury, Glover is not ready for showtime. Michael Maddox who scored 12 points by halftime was limited to 3 in the 2nd half and finished with 15. Clemson was led by Greg Buckner who scored 29 points in what would be his last game ever at Clemson's Little John Coliseum. Tech now falls into 6th place in the conference and needs a strong showing in the ACC Tournament to get a ticket to the Big Dance. The good news: Will the NCAA Selection Committee take only 4 from the ACC??? The Bad news: Florida State has wins over Arizona and Connecticut. "I think the magic number is 18 wins", said Senior Matt Harpring. We will find out after the ACC Tourney.

#1 DUKE SLAMS GEORGIA TECH IN HOME FINALE 76-53

TECH'S TOURNAMENT HOPES REST AT CLEMSON; DUKE FRUSTRATES HARPRING INTO 5-20 NIGHT; #15 RETIRED BY TECH
This game was supposed to be the game where Georgia Tech upset the #1 Devils and played themselves into the NCAA Tournament. Instead, the Jackets were pounded from the beginning from a Duke team that looked like NBA material. Duke started the game quickly and led 6-0 out of the gates, and after the game had little respect for Tech. "This was a night when Georgia Tech was in our way," said Roshaun McLeod, who was 3-of-5 beyond the 3-point arc. Tech never got going, and Michael Maddox was nowhere to be seen, scoring 7 points on 3-11 shooting. Dion Glover led Tech with 19 points. Alvin Jones was a bright spot with a couple of big jams, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Senior Matt Harpring, whose jersey #15 was retired before the game was forced into a 5-20 night finishing with 12 points. Duke put everyone they could on Matt, and it paid off. "Matt is one of the best players I have seen in the ACC in a while", said Coach K. "We came into this game with a plan to stop him." Harpring was obviously dissapointed by the loss on Senior night. "You can't have everything you want in life," Harpring said. "I would have loved to go out with a win." Harpring, however did pass Dennis Scott on the All-Time scoring list to move into 3rd place, 66 points behind Mark Price at #2. Tech's NCAA hopes have taken a hit, but are they out? The answer to that question lies at Little John Coliseum.

SLOPPY PLAY AND 26 TURNOVERS COST GEORGIA TECH AT MARYLAND

GLOVER SCORES 29; WAKE TIED WITH TECH FOR FOURTH IN THE ACC; HARPRING CATCHES DENNIS SCOTT AT #3 ON ALL TIME LIST
Dion Glover's 29 point effort was not enough to rescue the Jackets today at Cole Field House in Maryland today as the Terrapins locked up 3rd place in the ACC with a big win over Tech. Maryland, who led by 12 at the half (41-29) improved to 16-9, and 9-6 in the ACC. The Jackets dropped to 17-10 and 6-8 in the ACC. It was not hard to figure out what happened to Tech today as the turnover bug came back and bit them. The Jackets committed 26 turnovers, 17 of them by Maddox(6), Spivey(6), and Glover(5). Tech did not get the guard play from Travis Spivey that Spivey has been putting up lately. Tech also did not help themselves by shooting 33% for the game. Matt Harpring, who scored 31 against FSU, only managed 18 on 3-13 shooting. Tech cut a Maryland 12 point lead to 3 at 53-50 on consecutive three pointers by Glover and Spivey, but came no closer as the Terps went on a big run to put Tech away. Now it is crunch time with Duke coming to town for an ESPN matchup with the Jackets. The NCAA Tournament committee will be watching, so let's play well.

HARPRING SCORES CAREER-HIGH 31 AS TECH WINS CRUCIAL GAME 72-59

HARPRING MOVES PAST HAMMONDS TO #4 IN SCORING ; JACKETS MAY NEED ONE MORE TO GET NCAA BID, AS THEY MOVE TO 4TH PLACE IN THE ACC
Matt Harpring scored a career high 31 points as the Yellow Jackets took a monumental step towards securing an NCAA bid with a 13 point victory on the road. Harpring only had seven points at the half, but exploded in the 2nd Half to score 24 points (4-7 3's) and break open a close game in Tallahassee. Harpring also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Michael Maddox also proved himself once again scoring 15 points on 7-16 shooting, while Dion Glover added 10. Travis Spivey broke his 2-game streak of 0 turnovers as he added 7 against the 'Noles tonight. The major problem for the Jackets was rebounding. They were out-rebounded 31-13 in the 1st Half and still led 30-25 at the break. This was a big win for the Jackets as it avenged a 70-67 loss to the Seminoles last month in Atlanta. Tech now has 3 games left on the slate, and probably needs one more. They are @Maryland, Duke, and @Clemson. Clemson, who lost to Duke tonight, moves to 5th place in the conference with the win by Tech. A huge win by the Jackets. This may make March Madness interesting for a change for the Jackets fans. Let's hope. 3 tough games remain.

Travis Spivey has played mistake free basketball now for 2 straight games, and Tech is shooting well. Georgia Tech hit a season high 14 three-pointers (14-25). Curtis Staples was a one man wrecking crew as he single handily carried Virginia, with a career high 9-three point baskets. He finished with 31 points. Tech led 58-35 at the half and shot over 50% for the game. Wanna know how well Tech played? Virginia hit 7 of its first ten shots and still trailed by 10 points after six minutes. Tech is rolling.

HEART ATTACK CITY AS TECH HOLDS ON FOR BIG ACC WIN OVER WAKE

HARPRING SCORES 24 IN WIN; SPIVEY PLAYS SOLID
Winstom Salem, NC. Michael Maddox's free throw with 7.4 seconds left proved to be the game winner as Tech almost blew a late lead and hung on for a big win 77-76 over Wake. Tech led 70-61 with just under a minute left when Wake went on a three-point barrage led by Tony Rutland, Brent Goolsby, and Robert O'Kelley. They combined for 5 three-point baskets in the final minute and a half. This could have been a devastating loss for the Jackets, who are looking to get back to the big dance for the first time since the Stephon Marbury era. With the score 76-73 Tech leading, Michael Maddox missed the second of 2 free-throws. Wake got the rebound and O'Kelley hit a three-point basket with 12.4 seconds left to tie the game. Travis Spivey was intentionally fouled by Loren Woods and missed both free-throws. Luckily, the Jackets got posession of the ball after the miss. On the inbounds play, Michael Maddox was intentionally fouled by Brent Goolsby and hit 1 of 2 free throws to give Tech the lead at 77-76. Wake had one last chance to win the game but Wake could not knock down the shot and Tech held on for the huge road win. A little close tonight fellas. Matt Harpring led the Jackets with 24 points (13 in the 2nd half), and 15 rebounds. Travis Spivey played the best game of his career scoring 12 points with 7 assists and believe it 0 turnovers!. Nice Job Travis. Dion Glover added 20. Tech is sitting in good position with Virginia coming to town on Saturday.

OH SO CLOSE! TECH LOSES IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO #1 NORTH CAROLINA 107-100

MADDOX SCORES CAREER-HIGH 32 POINTS; HARPRING SCORES 30 AND GRABS 16 BOARDS
Atlanta, Ga. With a national television audience and many former Tech players present (Drew Barry, Stephon Marbury, Mark Price, etc), Georgia Tech played well enough to pull off an upset of the top-ranked team in the country. Michael Maddox showed up big today for the Jackets, and gave the kind of effort Tech fans have always known he had. Maddox scored a career-high 32 points, including the 1st overtime forcing 3-pointer with 6 seconds to play. Butthe story of the game was Shammond Williams, who scored 42 points on 8-11 3-pointers. Matt Harpring was brilliant as well scoring 30 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Tech had several chances to steal the top ranking from the Tar Heels, but some costly turnovers did them in. In the first overtime Tech led 86-82 on back to back three-pointers by Matt Harpring and Michael Maddox. Carolina would come back to take a 88-86 lead on a jumper by Shammond Williams. Tech would go up 90-88 and had the ball with 42 seconds to play. Michael Maddox's three point shot to ice the game hit the side of the rim and Antawn Jamison found a streaking Shammond Williams (42 points) who missed a lay-up but was fouled. Shammond made both free-throws to tie the game. Tech inbounded and Dion Glover made a great pass to Jason Floyd who missed the jumper, as Maddox tipped in the shot after the horn. That would be Tech's last great chance. "We were lucky to escape that first overtime," Carolina coach Bill Guthridge said. "Makhtar Ndiaye gave our team a real good pep talk going into the second overtime. I think we played a lot better and were really into it." My hats of to the whole team for a great effort. Harpring ended up with 30 points, and Dion Glover added 21 for the Jackets."If we can take the No. 1 team in the nation to the ropes, it shows how good we can be," Glover said.

After starting out the game with 10 turnovers in the game's first 10 minutes, Georgia Tech rebounded well, and showed alot of heart in a 70-52 win vs Clemson. Freshman Dion Glover scored 26 points and grabbed 5 rebounds on 10-18 shooting. "Dion is recognizing that ACC games are different from what he anticipated," said Jacket coach Bobby Cremins. "He made some nice shots tonight." Matt Harpring, who moved past James Forrest and into the No. 6 scorer of all time finished the game with a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds). Alvin Jones also had a double-double (11 points, 10 boards). Tech snapped a 4 game ACC losing streak by defeating Clemson Tech really showed alot of guts tonight by coming back on a strong team in the Clemson Tigers. GEORGIA TECH DROPS ANOTHER IN THE ACC TO #1 DOOK 90-69

We all knew it wasnt gonna be easy today. Georgia Tech, travelling to No.1 Duke, a place where the Jackets have had a tough time. The Blue Devils used a balanced scoring attack led by Roshon McCleod who scored 23 points, 16 in the first half. Tech which got to within 8 points with 17:00 minutes left dropped their 4th game in 5 outings. Freshman Dion Glover led the Jackets with 20 points, and Matt Harpring scored 19. Duke shot 49% from the field and hit a slew of three-pointers(10-22), while Tech shot fairly well shooting 44% but committed 21 turnovers, 7 by PG Travis Spivey who was basically non existent scoring 4 points on 2-7 shooting. "The turnovers really killed us," said Tech coach Bobby Cremins. "I can't say enough about Duke's defense. They're relentless. It's the old defense. They've got it back." Now Tech needs to get it back before they miss the NCAA's for the 3rd time in four years.

Dion Glover and Michael Maddox also poured in 16 as Tech (13-7), never had trouble. Tech quickly jumped out to a 22-7 lead and never looked back, leading at the half 49-21. Tech took its biggest lead of the game at 72-35 when Michael Maddox hit a jumper with 2:52 remaining. Alvin Jones continues to dominate the paint. Alvin had 7 blocked shots in the first half and ended up finishing with 8. Georgia Tech's schedule does not get any easier. They travel to Durham to take on #1 ranked Duke in Cameron. LATE THREE-POINTER EXTENDS TECH LOSING STREAK TO 3, 56-51

The Jackets lost another crucial ACC game today in Raleigh, North Carolina to the NC State Wolfpack 56-51. NC State covers the season sweep over Tech, after winning in Atlanta to open the ACC in December, 71-69. NC State guard Archie Miller hit a 3 point shot with 59 seconds left and State never looked back. Matt Harpring, who scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds had a shot in the last seconds (For the 3rd straight game) but missed a threepointer. The play of Travis Spivey lately has been suspect. Travis, who was late to a team meeting, was benched for some of the game. Spivey finished the game scoring 0 points. In fact, Tech had no points from their point guards the entire game. Unless he and Maddox learn to step things up, then this is going to be a long season for the Jackets. It looks to me that Spivey has all but lost his starting job next year. But there are alot of games still to go, so we will see. Tech next plays Georgia Southern Wednesday at 7:00 PM ET.

    MARYLAND 70 GEORGIA TECH 67

OFFENSE SPUTTERS IN LOSS TO MARYLAND 70-67

Georgia Tech may have just run itself out of contention for an NCAA berth tonight when they lost their third home game in the conference to Maryland. Maryland started the game with a 23-7 adavantage, but Tech cut the lead back to 2 at the half, 31-29. The Tech offense was the worst it has looked in a long time tonight. It seemed like everyone was out of sinc. The offense still needs help figuring out the system. We have some yong players and it takes time to learn how to win, especially in the ACC. Matt Harpring had another sub par shooting performance, but showed why he is the guttiest player in the league after returning from a gash under his right eye to score 14 points. Harp is gonna be ok though, so dont worry. Dion Glover played pretty well tonight scoring 21 points, but it was the offensive execution early in the game that led to this loss. This does not bode well for the Jackets, who dropped to 2-4 in the ACC. Tech lost by the same score for the second straight game as well (70-67 to FSU). Tech had a chance in the end after tying the game on a Harpring lay-up at 67, but Maryland got three foul shots when Harpring fouled Sarunas Jaskevicius while he attempted a 3 point shot with 1.1 to play. For the second straight week, Harpring's 3-point shot hit back iron at the buzzer. "This was almost one of the best comebacks in Georgia Tech history tonight", said Bobby Cremins. "I feel terrible, but we fought, and almost pulled this out", he said. "I am proud of these guys, and I love this team to death." Tech shot 30 percent from the field for the game (21-67). Alvin Jones collected 13 boards and 6 blocks for the Jackets. NC State is next on Saturday.

TURNOVERS COST GEORGIA TECH IN 70-67 LOSS TO FLORIDA STATE

Georgia Tech lost a big home game against Florida State on Sunday and fell a little further back in the ACC standings (2-3). It was one of those games that the Jackets needed to win and simply did not play good enough to win. The offense which has struggled all season continues. "I am not happy with the offense and we will have to get better", said Bobby Cremins. Matt Harpring tried to rescue the Jackets scoring 24 points on 7-22 shooting. Harpring and Jason Floyd were the only 2 tech scorers in double figures. Dion Glover continues to struggle in ACC play, scoring just 9 points on 4-14 shooting. It was nice to see Jason Floyd play so well, scoring 13 points. Tech who was down by eight points with 3:00 left to play rallied and had a chance to tie the game when a Florida State inbounds pass was tipped by Matt Harpring and stolen by Jason Floyd. Tech called timeout and called a play to Harpring on the right baseline. His three pointer at the buzzer hit back rim as time expired ending Florida State's five game losing streak. "I feel like we had a great opportunity," said Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins. "When players play hard and you miss good shots, you can't say anything negative. Every one of these ACC games is going to be just like that. "We got a great steal late in the game. I thought Matt was going to get a good look. It's incredible the way we keep coming back." Tech will try to get back on track when they host Maryland. The Maryland game is an important game for the Jackets in the ACC race. They need to beat Maryland and then beat NC State on Saturday in Raleigh to get back on track. Tech cannot afford to lose any more games at home right now. Matt Harpring said the other day that he is not so sure that Tech plays better on the road than at home. Well, the Virginia performance was a thing of beauty. Now lets only hope Tech can keep it up. It has been a long time since the Georgia Tech Basketball team has had something to smile about. The Jackets tonight broke their road losing streak (9) with an 83-65 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers. Tech led at the half by 13 points at 39-26, and never looked back. The final score was Tech's biggest lead of the game (18). Matt Harpring led the Jackets with 22 points, but the story of the game may have been Travis Spivey, who had 13 points and 9 assists. The Jackets shot 57% from the field. Matt Harpring and Michael Maddox shot a combined 16-22 from the field. According to Kevin Cantwell, Michael Maddox is playing well. "This is the Michael Maddox we have been waiting for," he said. "This is a big win, and Michael had to play against a tough kid tonight"(Norman Nolan). The closest Virginia came in the 2nd half was 8 points at 69-61, but Harpring closed that out with a three point play to give Tech an 11-point lead.
