RECRUITING NEWS

YELLOW JACKETS SIGN LOUISIANA PLAYER OF THE YEAR CLARENCE MOORE, AND HIS TEAMMATE

Bobby Cremins did something he has not done in several years at Georgia Tech. He has signed 2 recruits in the early signing period, both of whom hail from Louisiana. Clarence Moore, who was the Louisiana State 5-A player of The Year signed with the Jackets last week, along with his teammate Ross Chouest. Moore, a lefty at 6-6 and 225 pounds, who led South Lafourche to the State Final (54-48 loss to St. Aug who produced Kerry Kittles) is a serious division I player and should contribute immediately for the Jackets. As a senior, he averaged 23.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 blocks per game while shooting 61 percent from the field. Although he played center in high school, he is expected to play small forward for the Jackets. Although Chouest is not expected to make a big impact as a freshman, Bobby Cremins was still happy to sign both. "We're delighted to have these two outstanding young men join our program," said Cremins, who just completed his 18th season at Tech. "They come from an excellent high school program in Louisiana. "Clarence is a very athletic player with good scoring and rebounding ability," Cremins continued. "I think he will fit in well with the players that we have returning and can have an immediate impact. "Ross is a good shooter and ballhandler who will be an excellent addition to our backcourt." "Clarence is the best basketball player in the state, in my opinion, and one of the best to come out of this state the last few years," said his high school coach Scott Bouzigard, whose squad posted a 25-12 record this season and a 35-5 mark in 1997-98.Tech returns its top seven players from this year's team, including all-Atlantic Coast Conference forward Jason Collier and shot-blocking center Alvin Jones, and the Jackets also look forward to the return of standout Dion Glover, who missed the 1998-99 season with a knee injury after averaging 18.4 points per game as a freshman. Along with that, add Sean Fein a transfer from Stonehill College, and Tech could very easily be back in the top 20 next season.

JACKETS WAITING FOR DECISONS ON KEY RECRUITS

Now that the Basketball season is over, Bobby Cremins has been busy trying to build back his program. He has been spotted in South Louisiana a lot recently recruiting Clarence Moore, a highly touted 6-6 forward from South Lafourche High School. Also Tech is waiting word from DeMarr Johnson, the Gatorade High School basketball Player Of The Year winner, who will make his choice sometime in May. Here is a list I have recieved as to who Tech is hotly pursuing.

Clarence Moore-- a 6'6" small forward from South LaForche high school in Louisana said his top four schools as of right now consist of Georgia Tech, Houston, Texas and Clemson. Clarence has already taken an official visit to Houston and Southwest Louisana. LSU and New Orleans remain in the hunt as well. Clarence averaged 28ppg and 11.5 rebounds. South LaForche high school finished up with a record of 27-12.

Josh Kroenke-- Tech has started to pursue him really hard. A 6-4 shooting guard who has a deadly touch from the 3-point line. Missouri is the only school that Josh has taken an offical to Missouri, UMASS, Rhode Island, Villanova, and Tech.

Andre Barrett-- A 5-8 point guard who is ranked as the #10 Junior in the entire class has announced his final five schools which he will choose from. "It is very early right now but these are my top five schools", said Barrett. The 5-8 Barrett is so quick with the ball in his hands, that he often draws comparisons to Clemson's. His Top-5 are UCLA, Michigan,Syracuse, Georgia Tech, North Carolina.

    Others on Tech's list

Marshall Williams 6-5 Forward from Wisconsin will choose from Georgia Tech and NC State.

Imari Sawyer - Georgia Tech and UCLA

Ellis Myles (JR)- One of the Top Juniors in the class as well from Compton California. Connecticut, Kansas, Cincinnati, St. John's, UCLA, Kentucky, Georgia Tech and Duke. Ellis plans to break that list down to five in June.

GEORGIA TECH MAKING PROGRESS WITH RECRUITS; DAVID WEST CHOOSES XAVIER

With the season already over, Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins is wasting no time in finding more talent for his Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He has been a busy man lately, combining recruiting with preparation for the ACC Tournament. Coach Cremins recently returned from Louisiana searching for the right fit. Here are the big name players Tech has their eye on. Late note: Georgia Tech hopeful David West has commited to Xavier.

Robert Reed 6-11 220 Center from New Jersey is getting alot of attention from Georgia Tech. Cremins has been to scout him recently. Scored over 1,000 on the SAT's. Will choose among Tech, Notre Dame, FSU, Nebraska and Monmouth.

The Jackets are heavily involved in the recruiting for Wisconsin Wing Forward Marshall Williams. He is averaging over 22 points per game and 8 rebounds. Tech appears to be the front runner. Will choose from among Colorado, Georgia Tech, Rhode Island, and NC State.

Tech is still not out of the running for DeMarr Johnson who is a big time recruit (Top 10) from Pittsfield, Maine. He would give Tech the player Cremins needs, maybe the type of player who could lead Tech to the next level. He is mulling over Pitt, Michigan, Georgia Tech, and UNC Charlotte.

You can also add to that list Donnell Harvey, a Top 10 player who said he will wait until the Spring to sign. He lists Tech as his four favorite schools along with Kentucky, Georgia, Clemson, and Arkansas.

CREMINS, JACKETS GOING FOREIGN FOR RECRUITING HOPEFULS

DEMARR JOHNSON ALSO ON TECH WISH LIST

Almost everyone is awaiting the decision from one of the nation's finest players in DeMarr Johnson. Some say right now he could play in the NBA, and has the NBA as an option. Michigan, Kentucky, UConn, UNC, UNC Charlotte and Georgia Tech. Some say he is mulling over Tech and the NBA.

The Jackets might have a foreign presence on campus next season ad Bobby Cremins is on the recruiting fore front. He is 6-8 Tomas Nagys, a big Forward from Montgomery (AL) Catholic. He played for the Lithuanian National Junior team and is averaging just over 12 points and 16 rebounds per game. His game is often compared to Toni Kukoc, but a better rebounder. He has a solid outside game.

David West is another name as of late that Bobby Cremins has been interested in. He is also a 6-8 Forward from Hargrave Military in Virginia. I am going to see him play in the next few weeks, so I will give an updated opinion on his play. Needs to become more agressive is the concern among most college coaches. St. John's, Villanova, Clemson, VCU, Georgia Tec and Wake Forest. Update coming soon

    Other of interest

Ndu Egekeze 6-7 WF/BF Augusta (GA) Westside - Choosing from Tech and Marquette

Arturas Javtokas 6-10 C Western Nebraska (NE) JC- Big Time JUCO player Georgia Tech, Georgia, Clemson and Colorado. Many expect him to sign with Tech. Also hails from Lithuania.

RECRUITNG SEASON NOT GOING AS WELL AS PLANNED FOR YELLOW JACKETS

TECH NEEDS HELP FOR JONES,GLOVER,COLLIER,AKINS;2 HOPEFUL'S SHY AWAY FROM TECH
Just like last year, the spring time will be another bust time for Bobby Cremins and his staff. To date, Tech has signed just one single recruit for next season, thanks to the recent signings of Joe Forte (UNC) and Damien Wilkins (NC State). I have just recieved some information a short time ago, that Tech is now one of the front-runners for Kentucky transfer Myron Anthony. Please read below.

Signed: Shaun Fein (6-3 WG) --Stonehill College--MD - Must sit out a year due to transfer problems. Good friend of Jon Babul, averaged 20 points and fve assists a game. Was recruited hard by Fla State and NC State. Tech Hopefuls:

    1. Myron Anthony - Soph. Transfer - Kentucky - 6-7 200 Pound Forward - Anthony played on Kentucky's National Championship team. He apparently got in some trouble with the law while at Kentucky, involving an automobile belonging to teammate Wayne Turner. He is a great talent according to recruiting experts I have spoken to. He has narrowed his choices to Tech and Florida State. One key note: He is from Neptune Beach, Florida.

    2. DeMarr Johnson 6-9 WF Pittsfield (ME) Maine Central-- Tech really needs this talent. He is basically the only big time recruit left on the board. If Tech can get Johnson, it would put an end to the Tech recruiting misses. His schools include Michigan, Kentucky, UConn, UNC, UNC Charlotte and Georgia Tech. Apparently from sources, Tech is in the top 3 of his final list. I will find out more later.

    3. Donnell Harvey 6-7 BF Cuthbert (GA) Randolph-Clay Big-Time talent but academics are a big problem. Does not look like Tech would be a god fit for this talented scorer, but nevertheless has Tech in a list that includes Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama and Georgetown.

Others High School talent Jason Kapono 6-8 WF Lakewood (CA) Artesia So. Cal, UNLV, Utah, N.C. State, Georgia Tech, Stanford and Cal.

Ndu Egekeze 6-7 WF/BF Augusta (GA) Westside Big Man has alot of talent, and grades are not a problem. Marquette and Georgia are the others pursuing.

Late Note: Tech is in the mix for one of New York's top point guard's again. He is Junior Boo Williams and could be the No.1 Recruit in the year 2000. He has Tech on a list that includes Seton Hall, Houston, North Carolina, UMass, Texas, and California.

GEORGIA TECH HAS BIG NAMES ON NEXT YEAR'S RECRUITING LIST

LIST INCLUDES DAMIEN WILKINS, SON OF FORMER NBA STAR GERALD WILKINS
The list of High-School seniors who wanna play ball has drawn alot of promise for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Bobby Cremins. Hopefully this class can offset the almost nightmarish recruiting period the Jackets had this year, signing Tony Akins and Jason Collier, as well as another transfer from Florida A&M. With the ensuing departure of Dion Glover, the Jackets could use a sharp wing guard to bolster the attack. Glover is said to be leaving after this year, and that would free up a starting spot for an incoming freshman. The full list is below:

    1. DeMarr Johnson - 6-9 WF - Kensington, MD ----- Very athletic high school senior who probably will be the Number 1 prospect in the land, before the year is out. You know how Tech fares with No. 1. It seems as though it is either the NBA or we get stabbed. His schools include UNC, UNCC, Michigan, UNCONN, Georgia Tech, and the NBA (uh oh!).

    2. Donnell Harvey - 6-7 BF - Cutbert, Ga. (Randolph-Clay)----- Real strong work ethic, who lights up the scoreboard, and really is an intense competitor, who has great athleticism on both ends of the court, should be a top 5 prospect at seaon's end. His list includes Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Kentucky. Looks like another in-state battle between Tech and UGA.

    3. Joe Forte - 6-4 WG - Hyatsville, MD (DeMatha)----- He has gotten alot of attention from alot of schools as of late. He is kind like Al Harrington was last year, in the fact that alot of respect was given to him later on in his senior season. If you remember, Al was not even in the Top 10 to begin his senior season. Forte is a pure shooter in the mold of a Mitch Richmond. No shot is out of his range, and he is not scared to let it go. His List includes Kentucky, NCState, MD, Georgia Tech, and UNC.

    4. Damien Wilkins - 6-7 F - Kensington, Md (Newport)-----Big-Time player who is the younger son of former New York Knick Gerald Wilkins. Wilkins is a great inside player, and can also fill it up from outside as well. Wilkins is ranked top 5 by many, and his big body should help him overpower smaller forwards inside. Tech is at the top of his list, which includes Syracuse, Michigan, Duke, and UNC.

    Others to watch:

John Toombs(6-10 C) - Columbus, Georgia ------ Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Clemson, LSU, Vandy, and Georgia.

Justin Hamilton (6-3 G)Sarasota, FL ------Florida State, Miami, Tenn, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech

Schane Schilling (6-6 F) Minnesota ------Minnesota, Northwestern, BigTen, and Georgia Tech on his list.

Jeff Newton (6-8 F) Atlanta, Georgia ------FSU, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Clemson, and Wake Forest.

"1 OUTTA 2 AIN'T BAD", AKINS COMMITS TO GEORGIA TECH!!!

AKINS PICKS TECH OVER MICHIGAN MUCH TO PARENTS DISMAY; TECH AVOIDS DISSAPOINTMENT
Tony Akins today finally gave Bobby Cremins and the Yellow Jackets some good news after the sudden decision by Al Harrington to turn pro. Akins signed on the dotted line today at his Berkmar High School, and gave Bobby Cremins the point guard they so much need. Akins, the Georgia Player Of The Year, and so often compared to Travis Best, said it was a tough decision. "It went down to Tech and Michigan, and I just went with my gut feeling", said Akins. Akins grew up a Georgia Tech fan, and has always admired Tech coach Bobby Cremins. Akins' parents really wanted him to sign with Michigan, but Akins chose not to. Said Akins' mother, "I felt Michigan had the No.1 sports program in the nation, and their academics were not as tough, but it was Tony's decision and we will stand by it." Tony thinks he will be able to step in and start right away for the Jackets. "If given the opportunity, I feel like I can step in right away and run this team." Coach Cremins was glad to hear the good news as well. "TO get the Georgia Player Of The Year is great, there is nothing Tony cannot do with the ball, and we are excited. That wraps up Georgia Tech's recruiting season for 1998. Jason Collier, the Indiana transfer is the other signing Tech had. Looks like a good future for the Jackets.

ROCK BOTTOM!!! AL HARRINGTON DECLARES HARDSHIP FOR NBA

JACKETS HAVE NO SIGNEES TO DATE; STILL WAITING ON WORD FROM TONY AKINS
The worst has happened for the Georgia Tech Basketball team. Forward Al Harrington the nations No.1 high school player has picked the NBA over St. John's and Georgia Tech. He made it clear early today, but will make it official at a 3 pm news conference from his High School in New Jersey. This comes as a major blow to the recruiting period for Bobby Cremins, as he is attempting to put together a team who could have won the ACC next year with Harrington. Harrington spent the last few weeks talking things over with his mother, who wanted him to go to college. This decision happened within the last few days. Harrington has begun a training regimen that will give him 20-25 more pounds for the NBA. But, who cares now.

As far as Tony Akins, there is no word on him yet. The last thing I heard was that he was waiting for Al Harrington to sign, and that he would make a decision very soon. Akins' decision could come as early as today, but there are no indications that say so. There have been rumors that his grades may be a problem for entrance requirements, but throw that out the window because that is simply not true. Anyway, cross your fingers on Tony. He is more important than Al Harrington in the sense Tony will stay 4! Look for more updates on the Akins situation.

ABOUT FACE! NEW YORK POST REPORTING HARRINGTON WILL ENTER THE NBA DRAFT

    YELLOW JACKETS PROGRAM MAY TAKE A MAJOR BLOW; THIS COMES DAYS AFTER HE REPORTEDLY ELIMINATED NBA;
In a matter of 24 hours, Al Harrington has scratched his plans to come to college and will reportedly (according to the New York Post) throw his name into the NBA Draft. This comes as shocking news, because just last night I recieved information from a "very reliable source" that Tech was pretty solid to sign Al. This is not definite, but is being reported by the New York Post and the press conference will take place on Monday at Al's high school. Harrington's mother really was pushing for him to go to college, but it look like she may have lost along with Georgia Tech. The would be bad news for Bobby Cremins, as he is attempting to put back a team that could win the ACC next year. Cremins may be forced to scramble by the May 15th deadline to fill his roster. Anyway, guys, you can't win em all. Don't totally give up, because Al still has to announce on Monday, and my source is still telling me not to believe the rumor. It is the NEW YORK POST!!! Could Al have a ploy against the media?? We'll find out

  • Prep-Star Harrington reportedly going pro

HARRINGTON RUMORED TO BE ON HIS WAY TO TECH AFTER ELIMINATING ST. JOHN'S

AKINS WAITING ON HARRINGTON DECISION, BUT SHOULD SIGN SOON
In some pretty startling news, Al Harrington has eliminated St. John's from his final list of schools. He is down to 2 and Georgia Tech has become the clear leader for his services. According to an inside source, Harrington is on his way to the Flats. By eliminating St. John's, Georgia Tech has virtually locked up Tony Akins, who should sign maybe tommorrow. The deal with Tony is that he wanted to wait and see where Al was headed. Now that Al has eliminated St. John's, it is inevitable Tony will sign. There you go, this is coming from the same source who told me about Glover last year. Wait and see guys, this could be a beautiful week for Tech basketball. Harrington also cancelled his NBA workout the other day in New Jersey, and has decided on attending college. I reported last week that Al was not going to the NBA. This is the best news in a long time, hold on tight. Al will announce his intentions at a press conference Monday. It will not be on MSG, as originally planned.

HARRINGTON TO HOLD NBA WORKOUT ; AKINS ZEROING IN ON JACKETS

Al Harrington has caused quite a stir in the past few days by announcing he is holding a workout for NBA scouts today at his high school in New Jersey. I have learned though that Al Harrington is definately leaning on going to college. Basically what he wants to do is see where he is, and know what he needs to work on to make an impact at the next level. A couple of NBA scouts and GM's are going to be present, but Al is simply doing it to get opinions on what he needs to do in order to reach the next level. What college he will choose is a toss-up. It keeps going back and forth between GT and St. John's with Seton Hall falling out of the picture. One school to watch out for though is Villanova. Anyway, we should know in a couple of days where Al will be going. I tried to reach Al again, but calls were not answered (geez, I wonder why?). If any news breaks, it will be on Georgia Tech News.

Tony Akins has been rumored over the last couple of weeks by alot of internet site's as going to Dekalb JC. That simply is not true. Tony is still a heavy favorite to attend Georgia Tech. The deal now is his parents are leaning towards Michigan, but Tony, who has been a life long GT fan wants badly to play for Bobby Cremins. I honestly look for Tony to sign very soon with the Jackets. Worse case scenario in my opinion, is that we get one out of the two (Harrington/Akins). Good news for Tech fans though. Michigan is set in their back court with Bulloch. Tech is not with Spivey. I know Tony wants real bad to come to Tech, and I am sure it is going to happen.

TONY AKINS MULLING OVER GEORGIA TECH AND MICHIGAN ; AL HARRINGTON ELIMINATES THE NBA, AND WILL CHOOSE FROM 3 SCHOOLS

TECH HAS NO SIGNEES AS RECRUITING PERIOD HITS FINAL STRETCH
Just last month, it was all said and done basically. Yes, Tony Akins was a complete lock to enroll at Georgia Tech and play for Bobby Cremins. Now, it looks as though Tony may be changing his mind. Michigan has gotten involved real late and may make just enough of a push to take Tony away from Georgia Tech. Even Tony Akins himself his confused as to which school he is going to choose. "Right now, I have no idea between Tech and Michigan", said Akins. "I am going to have a good talk with my parents." That could be bad news. Akins' mother reportedly told Tony Georgia Tech was too dificult of a school. Stay tuned, this is gonna be scary.

Al Harrington (no explanation needed) has eliminated the NBA from his list. He apparently would like to attend college for at least 2 years to work on a couple of things. His High School coach said Al needs to work on his quickness and add a little more bulk to take it to the next level. Al will be deciding between Georgia Tech (The official leader), St. John's, and Villanova.
