The Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn

(from back cover) "When Rohan became the new prince of the desert ruler of the kingdom granted his family for as long as the Long Sands spewed fire, he took the crown with two goals in mind. First and foremost, he sught to bring permanent peace to his world of divided princedoms, realms hovering always on the brink of war. And, in a land where dragon-slaying was a proof of manhood, Rohan was the sole champion of the dragons, fighting desperately to preserve the last reaming lords of the sky and with them a secret which might be the salvation of his people." This is one of the best fantasy novels I have read in a long time. I don't usually like books with a lot of politics in it, but this one made it all so believable and entertaining I couldn't put it down. The books starts off with Rohan losing his father to his cherished dragons. Rohan is not the son his father always wanted he doesn't get a kick out of killing the dragons to him they are beautiful creatures that should be watched and enjoyed not killed for sport. His father just doesn't understand this nor does he understand Rohan's ways of studying books and trying to find a way out of war instead of war being a way of life. Then you add Sioned the beautiful Sunrunner to the picture. Sioned grew up in Goddess Keep where she learned to ride the sun light and the moonlight. Rohan fell for her instantly. But there are many things keeping Sioned and Rohan apart. For one, the High Prince wants Rohan to marry one of his many daughters. Little does he know that Rohan has no intention of doing any such thing. This is a large book that takes you through the lives, loves and loses of Rohan and Sioned. The world is so believable that you really feel you are there right in the middle of it all. There were times I even forgot that this was not part of our history and that no such place exists. I even enjoyed the fighting scenes which is a real rarity for me. I wish I could express to you how good this book is with out giving away more of the story but I can't. I can only hope that you get a chance to read it for yourself. I gave this book four stars and if there was a five star to give I would give that too *smile* .
