Kay Lee, aka Grandma Lee will leave Key West on Tuesday, August 17th on a journey for justice to Starke Prison near Gainesville. Ms Lee will make a brief stop in Miami to visit Joe Hart in the Miami VA and plans to be at the prison complex well before the prisoners' families begin to arrive for theironce a week visit on Saturday.

Ms Lee is making an effort to keep the investigation going until real changes are made.  Her main goal at the prison is to meet other prisoner's families and hear their personal stories.  And she wants to see Gary Waid returned to his federal prison in Texarkana.

Ms Lee is making an appeal to Gov Bush to force an investigation of prison practices in all Florida prisons and hopes this will motivate people all over the nation to demand the system make the walls of the prison industrial complex more transparent.

Starke is under investigation for the beating death of Frank Valdes.  However, all calls to do a through investigation and clean up have been ignored.

Federal marijuana prisoner Gary B. Waid #24582-034 (illegal D.C. #0-124551) has been trying to expose abuses in the New River Work Camp in Starke in his letter writing campaign to Florida newspapers.

Last week, without warning, guards removed Mr Waid from his cell and confiscated his writing materials. Major Tyson at the prison replied to Gary's attorney's (Don Cohn Miami - 305-324-1649) questioning: "He's being held here for writing a letter to the Miami Herald." This is an obvious effort to cover up the truth.

Warden Crosby stated in a phone call received approximately 4:15 today (Monday) that the process had been started to return Gary to his cell at the Florida State Work Camp.

Gary Brooks Waid was traded to the state system last year under Executive Order #98-188 signed by Gov. Chiles. Thirty drug offenders, all model prisoners, were sent to Florida in exchange for 30 violent state inmates, with then governor Chiles claiming the deal was to save Florida money.

Florida is threatening to make Gary stay in prison an extra 18 months.At approximately $30,000 per cell per year, how in the heck does that save anyone anything? And remember, there's at least 29 more like Gary in Florida.

Mr Waid was sent to Butler upon arrival in the Florida state system, where he wrote about the deplorable conditions in that prison (aka NFRC). Starke lists his initial receipt date as 11-5-98. (re: Internet Web Site for the Florida D.O.C.

Corrections Secretary Michael Moore wants to eleminate the second rate supervision of vital medical matters and the general operations in Florida prisons. How can he possibly explain this when we already know there's real human suffering within those walls?

Gary is a first time non-violent federal offender sentenced (with no drugs in evidence) to nine years for conspiracy to import marijuana.  He has never had to be punished in his entire 5 years of incarceration on the Federal level.
