Born in Lafayette, LA, Coach Sturgis graduated from Carencro High School in 1985 and was accepted to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He completed the US Army's Basic Training course in August of 1985 and went on to complete Military Police training in September of 1986, as honor-graduate runner-up. He then graduated from USL (now UL-Lafayette) in the Fall of 1993. Honors there included Dean's List from 1991-93 and Who's Who among American College Students.
Upon graduation, Coach Sturgis taught JTPA at JH Williams Middle School in 1994 and came to Abbeville High School in 1995. He teaches English I and English II and coaches both football and softball.
Coach Sturgis has been married for six years, has one son (3 years old), a daughter (1 year), and his wife teaches in Lafayette Parish. He completed service in the Louisiana Army National Guard as a Military Police Staff Sergeant with 13 years of service in 1997. Coach Sturgis was accepted to Who's Who Among American Teachers for 1998.
