Class Features

+1 Level Arcane Spellcasting: An Elementalist continues training in his previous arcane class(es), thus, when a new Elementalist level is gained, the character gains new spells per day and increased caster level as if he had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class he belonged to before he added the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (improved familiar progression, for example). This essentially means that he adds the level of Elementalist to the level of some other arcane spellcasting class the character has, then determines spells per day and caster level accordingly. If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class before he became an Elementalist, he must decide to which class he adds each level of Elementalist for purposes of determining spells per day and caster level when he adds the new level.

Elemental Specialist : The Elementalist chooses a specific element upon entering the prestige class. This element is associated with an energy type. Air (Electricity), Earth (Acid), Fire (Fire) and Water (Cold). Sonic energy is the domain of the Force Mage and not a true elemental energy. The elementalist no longer gains the benefit of his Spell Focus feat toward any other energy type than the one associated with his element. He still gains it for non-elemental based spells. However, the elementalist can now prepare spells with an energy type (other than sonic) as the energy type of his element. He cannot yet spontaneously change the energy type, this comes later, so he must prepare the spells ahead of time for this ability to be used. Spell Mastery spells, however, can be altered in this way on the fly.

Mastery of Evocation: The elementalist has, through the study of his element, mastered the art of casting spells through evocation. Any spell on his spell list with an energy type (other than sonic) he can now prepare as an evocation spell, regardless of its previous school. This is true even if the spell was of a school forbidden to the elementalist. Thus, conjuration, abjuration or any other school’s spell with an energy descriptor can be prepared as an evocation spell by the elementalist. He cannot spontaneously convert such spells, he must prepare them as such, but spells on his Spell Mastery list can be spontaneously converted in this way. The elementalist can learn these spells even if normally not allowed due to opposition schools, only by learning them as evocation spells.

Elemental Transformation: The elementalist begins to take on the traits and appearance of his element. His spells also take on these traits. This is a purely cosmetic effect, and can be controlled by the elementalist. Thus an air elementalist would have glowing eyes of lightning, with energy and electricity running up and down his body periodically. The smell of ozone will follow him, and his touch will give others a minor (harmless) shock. His spells will be laced with electricity as well. His web spell will have electricity running across it strands, and his shield spell will glow with lightning like radiance. His fly spell will have a trail of sparks following it, and those under his mass haste spell will exhibit similar electrical traits as he himself. These effects are harmless, and the elementalist can suppress them as he desires.

However, a more substantive effect is that the elementalist gains Resistance (his element’s energy type) of 10 per elementalist level. So by level 5 elementalist, an air elementalist has Electricity Resistance 50. This is a supernatural ability. He is also able to transform into an elemental or elemental based creature of his specialty as a Standard Action. This elemental shape lasts 1 hour per elemental class level or until the elementalist chooses to end it. This is exactly like Polymorph Self except the form is an elemental or elemental based creature. Unlike the usual spell, the elementalist retains his resistance ability while in this new form (unless the new form has better resistance where he will take that instead). He can transform himself like this 1/day. However, if he casts the Polymorph Self spell, he can assume the form of an elemental or elemental based creature of his element and keeps his supernatural resistance to his energy type even though the spell normally does not allow this. This is a supernatural ability.

Elemental Power: The elementalist is so powerful when wielding his element, he can partially or even fully bypass resistance to his element. Creatures with resistance to the energy type of the elementalist do not resist that form of energy as well when resisting spells of that type cast by the elementalist. The elementalist makes a spell penetration roll as if attempting to bypass spell resistance. The check result is the amount of the resistance the elementalist ignores from the creature for that spell casting. If a creature is totally immune and thus has no specific resistance value, treat them as having Resistance 50 for this purpose.

Elemental Mastery: The elementalist has achieved elemental perfection at his chosen element. He can now spontaneously convert prepared spells of an energy type into that of his chosen type when the spell is cast. This requires a Full Round Action. Furthermore, any spell with an elemental type (other than sonic) from any spell list is now considered on the spell list of the elementalist at the same spell level. Additionally, any spell from his spell list that causes damage as its primary function (DM’s call), can be converted into an elemental spell of the elementalist’s energy type. So horrid wilting, for example, normally a necromantic spell, can be converted into an elemental spell of the energy type of the elementalist’s chosen element. This ability must be used when preparing the spell, and cannot be used on the fly, except with spells on your Spell Mastery list. The elementalist’s Mastery of Evocation ability applies to all of these spells as well now, so he can convert the necromantic horrid wilting spell into an evocation spell as well as one with his energy type. However, if the spell is normally restricted from his use, he can only learn it if he learns it as a converted spell, converted into an evocation spell of his chosen energy type.
