Brought to Southeast Asia through Buddhist and Hindu missions, mehndi carries many of the same traditions here as it does in India. The designs may not be as intricate, but great emphasis is placed on the depth and duration of the henna stain. Mehndi is considered to be a good omen in this part of the world, to be taken seriously, and really only practiced as part of the wedding ceremony.
SYMBOLS—Southeast Asia
These symbols are very similar to Indian designs, but are less detailed and cover a smaller area of skin. It is more popular to dip the fingertips and toes into the henna to produce a solid, all-over color effect.
