TURKEY HUNTING SEMINARS

Wild turkeys are Native to southern Ontario and their numbers fell off around the turn of the century as land was cleared for farming and hunting was unregulated. In 1984, a re-introduction program was kick started by the OFAH and OMNR. From and original 276 turkeys received from various USA states, the Ontario population has grown to an estimated 16,000 birds.... and on the rise! The reason for the success has been put on the resurgence of large tracts of hardwood forest growth, wildlife oriented forestry techniques, regulated hunting and live trap transferals of the birds to other suitable areas in the province.

Many of the first areas of re-introduction have seen spring hunting opportunities made available within the first few years of transfer. And truly people, if it wasn't for the support of the hunting fraternity in this province, these birds would have never made it back. It is the hunting faction in this province that makes game birds such as these, a valuable renewable resource. Hats off to the hunters, OFAH and the MNR.

The turkey hunt takes place in the spring when there are very few other open seasons available to shooters. The kill is limited to male (bearded) turkeys. Springtime is best for hunting male gobblers as they can usually be called to a waiting area. The birds are respondent to a call during the breeding season. Proposed seasons this year are from Apr 27 thru the end of May. It has also been proposed that hunters be able to purchase an additional licence after their first kill. New areas for hunting have also opened up.

Prior to anyone being able to purchase a turkey hunting stamp, they need two items..... a valid outdoors card (hunting version) and a certificate of completion of the Wild Turkey Education Seminar. Last year, a seminar was scheduled for Chatham but was cancelled due to lack of response. NO WAY! Lack of communication was the problem cuz I know there are enough interested hunters to fill this course.

At the seminar you will learn the biology of the wild turkey, the re-introduction efforts, calling techniques, hunting tactics, shotguns, etc, etc. CUMMON!!!!!! This is fun stuff people! I don't care if you ever plan on hunting turkeys in Ontario, this is going to be a blast! The seminar in Chatham will be hosted by the Kent Cloverleaf Club at their facilities just outside Chatham on Sunday Apr 5. It is a day long thing, and will cost you $18. Can you handle that to show support for the hunting fraternity in this province? No prob eh?

You have to pre-register. To register you can call OFAH at 705 748 6324. You will need your Outdoors Card and a Visa, MasterCard, whatever. You can also use the mail in registration form. The forms are available at G & K Archery on Margaret ave in Wallaceburg. DON'T HESITATE. CALL NOW. Seating is limited and this seminar will fill fast. I will get more specific info on times, lunches, etc, later. I will also get more detailed info on hunting areas. At this time, I know there is some good legal shooting within an hours drive time.
