Critical Judgement by Michael Palmer
In the small town of Patience, CA, newcomer Dr. Abby Dolan has noticed a terrifying syndrome among emergency room patients. It begins with a puzzling, yet minor set of symptoms, but builds until it sends the victims into insane, murderous rages. As she searches for clues to the deadly mystery, Abby's superiors make it clear her probing is unwelcome. Soon Abby will learn just how high the cost of the truth may be, and how far someone will go to keep a lethal secret.
Capitol Offense by Barbara Mukulski and Marylouise Oates
Eleanor "Norie" Gorzack is picked by the governor of Pennsylvania to replace a suddenly deceased U.S. senator. This has angered some extremists from her home state, and after two murders Norie must find out who wants her dead and why.
The Falconer by Elaine Clark McCarthy
Tired of a life of dutiful commitment, India Blake finds her life transformed by an encounter with Rhodri, a master falconer, who helps her realize that passion and a deep relationship with another person can transform one's life. A stunning love story set in the Sierra Nevadas, this is a stong, poetical, enchanting story that will have readers smiling, weeping, and reflecting.
The Cradle Will Fall by Mary Higgins Clark
Katie DeMaio's life is in deadly peril - but she doesn't know it. As Valley County's assistant prosecutor, she is busy investigating the mysterious deaths of Vangie Lewis, a pretty, young expectant mother, and Edna Burns, receptionist at the maternity clinic at Westlake Hospital. One by one, Westlake's maternity clinic gives up its horrifying secrets. This is one of my all-time favorites. I have read this book 4 times over the years because the story is just so compelling. Each time I pick it up to read, I can't put it down till the last page is read!
The Partner by John Grisham
In my opinion, this is Grisham's best work. One cold winter night, Patrick Lanigan dies a horrible death in a burning car. Behind a tree Patrick watches as they bury his ashes. A huge fortune was stolen from his ex-firm's offshore account. Patrick ran, covering his tracks, but he is found. This is where the intrigue begins. You will be stunned by the ending but you will never forget the story.
Man, Woman, and Child by Erich Segal
Bob and Sheila Beckwith have been happily married for eighteen years and have two beautiful, young daughters. Then a shocking secret threatens to tear their family apart. Erich Segal (also the author of Love Story) writes a riveting and compelling story of a family in crisis. This heart-breaking and heart-warming story will have you smiling through tears and will warm your soul.
The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans
After her daughter and the girl's horse are injured in a tragic accident, Annie Graves travels across the continent, in search of Tom Booker, the Horse Whisperer, hoping he can use his gifts to help both the horse and the maimed girl. This has been made into a movie, but don't rely on the movie to tell the story to the fullest. This is a touching tale that stays with you long after the last page.
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a futuristic society that is seemingly ideal. No poverty, no crime, no sickness, and no unemployment, it seems the perfect Utopia. Not untill Jonas is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to understand the dark secrets behind his community. This fascinating and provocative tale may disturb some deeply held beliefs. Considered a young adult novel, it can be read in one day by an adult, but it will effect you profoundly none-the-less.
