LSUNO celebrated its first annual homecoming with a convincing 28-6 victory over the visiting Spring Hill College Badgers of Mobile, Alabama at last Saturday night's game played at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park.
The Privateers were led offensively by wingback Jim Armstrong, quarterback Buddy Long, and halfbck Guy Huard. Defenisve end Gene Bernard was outstanding as he made nine unassisted stops, blockeda punt and intercepted a pass.
Armstrong had an outstanding evening scoring three of the four Privateer touchdowns and snagging a PAT pass from Long.
The Privateers lost little time in scoring as they drove 58 yards in seven plays the first time that they had their hands on the ball.
Wingback Jim Armstrong did the honors with 9:45 left in the first quarter as he caught the Spring Hill napping on a reverse around left end from seventeen yards out.
Long's PAT pass to Armstrong on a down and out pattern resulted in an 8-0 Privateer lead.
The Badgers came right back and scored four plays later as Badger quarterback Gerald Rogers passed 45 yards to end Tex Johnson for a score.
Bud Sutherland intercepted Rogers' pass for the PAT n the end zone and LSU led 8-6.
Late in the first quarter Randy Spearman intercepted a Badger pass on a superior effort at midfield to stymie a Spring Hill drive.
The Privateers then drove 50 yards in eight plays for their second score. Armstrong carried the final 15 yards behind beautiful blocking by the entire offensive line on a wingback reverse around right end.
Long's run for the PAT was stopped short of the goaline and LSUNO led 14-6.
Late in the second period LSUNO found itself with a first and ten at the Spring Hill 42 following a Badger punt.
After two plays netted a first down, Long hit end John Correa with a screen pas on the left side of the field. Behind tremendous blocking Correa scampered 32 yards across the field to score the Privataeers' third tally.
Long's PAT pass fell incomplete and the Privateers held a lead which held up through halftime.
Spring Hill came up with a break midway through the third period as Long fumbled the snap and guard Mike Yohan fell on the muddy pigskin on the LSUNO 18. Three plays carried the Badgers to the Privateer one.
Halfback Tom Netter tried to crash over from the one but was met by Armstrong, Spearman, Bob Lucas, and Richard Stierwald. On the last down Netter again tried the middle but was stopped short of paydirt due to the defensive heroics of Nick Smith and able assistant George Baud who rose to the occasion on a tremendous goal line stand.
The Privateers were not satisfied with a 20-6 lead and near the end of the game drove down to the Spring Hill 48 where two back-to-back 15 yard penalties against the Badgers put the Silver and Blue in business at the Badger 16.
LSUNO moved down to the one where Long calmly flipped a one yard pass to Armstrong for the final score of the game with 15 seconds remaining.
Long ran around right end for the extra point and the score at the final gun was 28-6 in favor of the Privateers.
The win placed LSUNO's club football record at 2-1 for the season.
