"Yarborough"

A Yarborough is a hand with no card higher than a 9.

A Yarborough is named after a certain Lord Yarborough who, in the whist days in the late 1800's, promised to pay 1000 pounds to every player who was dealt a hand with no card higher than a 9, on the condition that this player paid him 1 pound for every other hand he was ever dealt.

The Yarborough Bell Tower

A special part of the Davis Memorial Library lies along the side of its dogwood trees The Yarborough Bell Tower in North Carolina. It is especially pretty in the spring time, which is when the picture was taken.

Syrus Yarbrough
Reality Television Star (MTV)

You saw him on the Real World: Boston and Real World/Road Rules Battle of the Sexes, but there is a lot more to Syrus then just girls and parties.

Syrus attended the University of Hawaii, Hilo, where he achieved success in playing basketball from 1992 to 1994. He ranks within the top ten in the following categories:

*Number 8 in Free-throw Percentage, 79.9%, FTA/FTM 123/154
*Number 10 in 3-Point Field Goal Attempts, 143

Syrus was definitely the ladies man of the group during his season on The Real World; he would not allow his roommates to deter him from brining women to the house whenever he pleased. Syrus certainly played hard during his time in Boston; however, he also worked hard before he left. When it came time to give something to the children at the youth center, Syrus realized that he wanted to make a difference to their lives.

During the show, basketball was one of his hobbies, and Syrus has also appeared on MTV for specialty sporting events. Syrus now owns a nightclub promotion business in Miami Beach.

Jim Yarbrough
Head Coach of the Southeastern Louisiana University Men's Basketball Team in Hammond Louisiana

In six years as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston beginning in the mid-90?s, Jim Yarbrough helped develop a blue print of success for one of America?s top Division I mid-major college basketball programs. In five seasons as a head coach at the Division II level, he resurrected a once-proud program and molded it into a national power.

?I see Southeastern at a juncture in its history, with the good work that?s been done here in recent years, with back-to-back 20-win seasons I think it?s at a place now where it can stay the same or slip back and kind of ebb and flow,? Yarbrough said. ?Our task will be to make sure it not only does it stay at this position and compete for conference championships on a yearly basis, but perhaps carve out a niche in the college basketball world of being a top program that can knock off the big boys and be a giant killer and I think we have a good idea on how to do that.?

?My vision (for Southeastern) is taking that blue print of success that has been handed down and applying it here,? Yarbrough said. ?It?s about being very organized, doing things well, quality, a standard of excellence and keeping a constant intensity level at everything you do.?

Prior to his appointment at Southeastern, Yarbrough spent the past five seasons as head coach at Division II Valdosta State where he won 70 percent of his games and led the Blazers to two Gulf South Conference championships and two berths in the NCAA tournament.

His success at Valdosta State centered on a staple of Southeastern basketball the last few years - defense.

Emphasizing a tough, pressure defense, Yarbrough?s teams were consistently ranked among the national leaders in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense.

"Jim Yarbrough is one of the best young tacticians in college hoops. He is innovative and spends most of his 24 hours a day thinking basketball. His professional style and demeanor have made him very popular in Charleston"-Coach John Kresse

A native of Tampa, Fla., Yarbrough is married to the former Glynda Burton and they are the parents of two children, daughter Samantha and son Jack.

Auburn gets a golf club for AU folks

AUBURN Aubie the Tiger, cheerleaders screaming "War Eagle," Auburn University President William Muse, Athletics Director David Housel and Auburn mayor Bill Hamm Jr. all together in the same place.

I went to the Auburn vs. Central Florida homecoming football game, right? Wrong. I was present at Friday's official christening of the Auburn University Club at Yarborough Farms, a golf course that is the product of a partnership between Auburn University alumni and the University Clubs of America.

This new development is just a stone's throw from campus off Shug Jordan Parkway. It is a private club, yet unaccompanied guest play is allowed. In return for lending its name, Auburn University will receive a portion of the profits.

"It is a club for Auburn people, built by Auburn people," Housel said. Cecil S. Yarborough Jr. donated the land for the course. Yarborough, 87, was a fraternity brother of coach Shug Jordan. He has owned this land for many years, always hoping it could be turned into a golf course for the university. That day has now arrived for this man who spent his working life as a veterinarian in Mobile.

In its choice of golf course designer, the Auburn University Club chose one of its own: Bill Bergin. He was a four-time All SEC selection and a member of Auburn's 1981 SEC Championship team. He played professionally on the PGA Tour for six years, as well as three years as a teaching professional.

"I'm glad Dr. Yarborough decided to wait 18 years," Bergin said. "With Saugahatchee Creek, a 30-acre lake (Lake Yarborough), rolling terrain and other natural amenities, it was a lot easier to come up with a fine course."

Multiple membership categories to the club are available, based upon a person's proximity to the location. The farther you live from the club, the cheaper the initiation fees and dues.

A quaint touch is that not more than 1,957 memberships will be available, commemorating the year that the university's football team won its only national title.

The property is quite rolling, providing for some beautiful vistas. And at 7,259 yards from the back tees, it is long enough to challenge even the longest hitters.

Some of the best players to test the course on a regular basis will be the men's and women's golf teams from the university. It has become their official home course, with golf offices and a sophisticated teaching room in the master plans.

The initial clearing of the property began in March 1998. Director of golf and general manager Bucky Ayers showed me around the course, which naturally has some maturing to do, but is a fine layout.

STUDENTS RAISING THE FLAG

Dr Craig S. Yarborough

Dr. Craig S. Yarborough is the Associate Dean for Student Services at the UOP School of Dentistry. He and his staff are responsible for finding 136 of the best and brightest applicants to fill each incoming class and finding ways to help them afford a dental education through financial aid. He began his extended career in education at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, earning a bachelor's degree in 1977. Heading straight into the School of Dentistry, Dr. Yarborough completed his lifelong dream of becoming a dentist upon his graduation in 1980 and subsequent associateship with 1964 alumnus Dr. Harry Bader in Lodi, California.

Dr. Yarborough began teaching at UOP one-day a week as an adjunct faculty member at the San Joaquin County General Hospital extramural clinic in February 1981, a short eight months after his graduation. After the closure of the clinic in 1985, he began teaching in the emergency department in San Francisco. Three years later, he transferred to the preclinical removable prosthodontics department. In July 1993, Craig retired from his general practice and accepted a full-time teaching position as group practice administrator at UOP.

"Part of the message a student receives while attending UOP is the value of giving something back -- to your community, to your profession, or to your alma mater," says Dr. Yarborough. "Being a group practice administrator allowed me to feel like I made a difference in the lives of the students. Receiving the Student Body Award for Teaching Excellence from the Class of 1996 helped confirm this. Now as Dean of Student Services, I am in a unique position to affect the quality of incoming students and as a clinical faculty member, to evaluate the skills of our graduates entering private practice."

Dr. Yarborough shares a well-balanced life of work and family with his wife Nancy, daughter Jenna and son Matthew in Greenbrae, California in Marin County. Sports are his passion and he has enjoyed the opportunity to coach his children in basketball, baseball, and softball.

His friendship eventually led to Brother Yarbrough becoming Charlie's personal assistant, managing public relations and security for the Charlie Daniels Band on the road. Brother Yarbrough was residing in Nashville when he decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an actor. He landed roles in commercials, including Service Merchandise and Dollar General Stores, in two music videos - Amy Grant's "Stay Awhile" and Alabama's "Can't keep a Good Man Down," and he stunt-doubled Jerry Reed in the feature film What Comes Around.
