TOP of the Pubs winner Alex Peters is on the lookout for new musical equipment.
With $5,000 in hand, he is planning to buy new gadgets to improve his performance.
Cheered on by a multitude of fans, he as expected, won the Carlsberg-MUM Top of the Pubs '88 Contest at Rampaisari Ballroom, Subang Merlin, last Saturday.
The popular pub singer looked dazed and surprised when he walked on stage to receive his prize. The second prize of $3,000 went to Leonard Tan and Frankie Tan, who had won the first Top of the Pubs Contest 10 years ago.
"Really, I didn't expect to win, said Alex just after the results were announced.
And as for the crowd that had amassed to support him Alex said: "I first panicked when I saw the size of the crowd, but later, that spurred me on to perform better."
Coming on last after the other ten finalists, Alex blazed the ballroom with his versions of Herbie Hancock's Rock It and Timbuk 3's The Future's So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades).
Alex explained why he selected Rock It: "Two of the judging criteria were technical ability and originality. The song features a lot of synthesizers and record scratching. I just showed that it could be done on guitar."
He used a tape machine on which he had already laid down bass and drums tracks to back him as he played an scratched the guitar strings.
