Growing up as the only girl in a family of men with harsh attitudes about life was hard on Katerina. Her brother Alucard and Adirian were harder on her then her father was.
Alucard is the oldest of the three children, which means the responsibility of the other two children lay upon his shoulders. He was always over protective of his father, more then his siblings. He kept a close eye on his brother and sister when their father was around not trusting anyone. Alucard loved his father but up to a point.
Adirian the middle child of the family, was the man to put an end to their fathers rane of terror amongst the villiagrs and neighboring villiages. He was extremely overprotective of Katerina while they were growing up. So overprotective that he was the one to sire his own sister to keep her out of harms clutches.
Lisa Tepes the biological mother of Adirian and Katerina was a simple calm woman, who loved all the children greatly. Alucard treated her like his own mother. Adirian and Katerina adored her tremendously. Vlad wanted someone to take care of his children, but deep on the inside he loved Lisa more then life itself.
Home is where the heart is...also where father hung the enemies heads. K.T.Soulbane '1600
I guess you could say it was hard growing up with a father like Vlad Tepes. He was a little eccentric at times, he loved to make my mother go crazy with anger. There were times we wondered if they would not kill each other on those crazed nights that they would fight. We never understood why they were together, they were as different as oil and water. They hated each other so much they would try to deliberately hurt each other. What we didn't know, growing up, was that they loved each other more then we would ever know, even more then they knew.
The worse part about love is that sometimes you don't let the other person know, until it is to late to do anything about it. My father knew about that all to well. He waited to long and hesitated for so many years, that when the time finally came for him to truely open his heart, the heart he once had, it was too late. For Lisa, my mother, was gone. Ripped from the family that she loved and burned before the whole village for a claim that was a lie.
One cloudless, bright sunny day Lisa decided to go into the village to check on the dwealers of the land to see how they fared. While she was walking towards the home of the blacksmith a small child ran to her crying. Lisa bent down to the child's level and began to wipe away the tears from his eyes. "What is wrong there, Joseph?" she said with a deep concern in her voice. Little Joseph Caunasha looked at Lisa a little glimps of hope within his eyes, "Mama isn't well, I think she is sick" said the little one. "Well then let us go and see your mama and fix her right up," Lisa said as she rose to her feet taking little Joseph's hand as she walked towards the small beaten up shack.
Upon entering the shack, Lisa realized that the place hadn't been cleaned in what looked about weeks. There was dirt all over the place, the rushes hadn't been changed, and the sheet looked as if they were a dark color from the dirt and soot. She glanced around looking for Joseph's mother, finding no one she called out, "Gerana, are you here?" Still no answer was heard to her cries, so Lisa looked to the boy and smiled as she spoke to him, "Why don't you go and play while I wait for you mother to return?" "Yes, me Lady," Joseph stated with a short bow before he ran off to the woods. Slowly Lisa began to walk towards the room in the back that was divided by a dusty smelly sheet. As she got closer to the sheet she heard someone moan from pain. With shaken hands Lisa pulled the dirty curtain to the side and looked into the room. She almost fell to the floor from the ragged and disheavled appearence of Gerana. "Gerana, what happened to you?" she said as she bent down to help Gerana to the bed that was nearby. Gerana looked at her as if she never laid eyes upon her before. Lying Gerana upon the bed, Lisa walked out to the other room to get her bag of healing herbs and vials of liquids. Walking back into the room Lisa saw Gerana clutching her sides as her pain was beginning to get worse. Lisa dug into her bag removing the herbs that she needed, mixing the herbs with the liquids at the side of the bed, Lisa continued to watch Gerana trying her best to hurry. Since Lisa was concentrating and Gerana was making so much noise, Lisa didn't hear the noise as some of the vilagers came into the shack.
Having the mixture completed Lisa rose from her side of the floor, she walked slowly over towards Gerana so she would not spill the mixture. As Lisa was leaning down to help Gerana up so she could take the medicine the door flew all the way open and Gerana's husband and the others were standing in the room. "Unhand my wife, Black Witch," growled Malbin as he glared at Lisa. Lisa stood up straight her head held high as she spoke to him, "Malbin you know naught what you speak of. I am not a witch, I have never been and you have no proof that I am." "I need no proof and we are tired of being afraid of you, we have come here today to be rid of you once and for all," he said as he looked to his wife. Out of the corner of her eye Lisa saw Gerana get up from the bed and walk over to her husband as fit as the day she was born. Malbin smiled as he spoke this time, "Grab her and take her to the stake that is in the courtyard." Two men stepped forward to grab Lisa, but before they could get ahold of her she unsheated her dagger. She slashed at the one man on her right, cutting his arm causing him to step back from her. She was searching the room like a caged animal trying to find a way to escape. The other man came from behind her while she was searching and knocked her on the back of the head. Lisa fell to the rushes in a pool of sapphire silk, her mind fell deep into the darkness of her own personal hell.

That night I watched as my mother was burnt at the stake right before my eyes. I was only 16 years old on that day. My father and brothers were visiting family in another land. Upon their return my father went into a fit of rage and began to cause havoc upon the vilage and he captured as many vilagers as our dungeons could hold. My brother Alucard disappeared from sight and I never saw him for many years. Rumor had it that Alucard was lerking within the high towers of the castle watching our father and protecting him from a distance. Adirian did the only thing he could do and that was runaway. Do not judge my brother harshly upon that decision. He ran because he was young and our mother was no longer there to protect him from our father. Vald and Adirian fought constantly and never got along over anything, except what was best for me. But what Vlad didn't know was that Adirian knew about his plans to change me into an immortal behind my mothers back. My father had this vision of our family ruling with an iron hand. He would have his two sons and his beloved daughter to rule the world.
Many years later after my father depleated every source we had and the villagers were ready to kill him, Adirian returned. When I saw my brother at first I had no idea who he was. There was a look of death in his eyes, something I never saw before. I walked towards my brother slowly and didn't even see him until he was right next to me. I looked into his eyes again and I saw sorrow, for he whispered ever so softly to me, "Forgive me my sister, but this is the only way to protect you." Then I felt the sharp prick of something upon my neck and I was never the same again.
I remember not much after that, the memories are kind of haunting actually. I saw my brother kill our father in a fit of rage. I remember hearing my father tell Adirian that he ruined his plans to own the world.
After I heard that I realized how truely crazed my father had become after my mother was killed. Adirian took care of me until I was able to take care of myself and then he left again with a promise that we would meet again someday.
That was a promise he kept, for a few years ago I was able to find him and Alucard in a realm I never knew existed. My brothers had families of their own and I was welcomed with open arms. I stayed with the family and helped Adirian rebuild it slowly to the strength it is to this day.
Many Lonely Years Later
Katerina had changed since her brother left her many years ago. She had become some raged infested being. Her moods changed quickly like day and night. From this scribes point of view, she had changed completely after her father’s death. She would roam around Castle Vania Manor as if she were a caged animal trying to find it’s way to freedom. She went from the loving caring young mistress of the Manor, to an angry and obsessed being that no one recognized any more. Having realized that she no longer could call the Manor her home, Katerina decided to embark upon a journey to find her brothers, if they were still alive.
She left the Manor without even a glance back, carrying only a small bag with her; the bag containing the only things she could not leave behind, her mother’s healing herbs and vials of liquids, a small portrait of her mother and father together, and her mother’s wedding ring. After years of no success, Katerina stumbled upon a tavern in a realm she never knew existed, but her senses brought her there. She walked into the tavern with apprehension, not sure of her place as she walked through the door. Now this tavern was not your regular place to dwell, at least no pure human dwellers were patrons within this establishment. The drinks that were served consisted of blood wyne, elven’s wyne, and a special Scottish brew. The tavernwench (who was named Cassie) served these strange concoctions with a smile on her face and a dagger at her side. Katerina inhabited this tavern many months following her entrance into this new realm. And I can personally say that I didn’t understand it. For while watching Katerina I couldn’t miss the sights around me. There were beasts with fangs, mages that dispelled magick from their flesh, and every now and then you would see a headless body being burned as the heart was in the executioners hand. I never truly understood her strange fascination with this barbaric place. Then one day as Katerina was sitting at a table, drinking from her goblet; her attention was drawn to the door as if she knew some how who was there. As I turned my blacken gaze towards the door, you could imagine my surprise that after all these years she actually found her brother alive. Adirian was standing in the doorway, and as if sensing his sisters presence he turned his deep, dark, blue eyes straight to her without faltering his gaze. Walking towards her table a smile upon his face, to some he would have looked as if he were floating towards her, he picked Katerina up into his strong arms and hugged her tightly. Her eyes were swimming with tears and her heart filled with a feeling she didn’t understand. They sat at that table for many hours talking; ever now and then I would hear a slight laughter from their table. Then suddenly without warning they rose and walked out of the tavern.
Following them quickly, I noticed a tall structure that they were heading to. Not knowing the reason why her brother brought her here, Katerina held back a little bit. Then as the door opened her expression changed into a feature that this scribe hadn't seen in many years, Katerina was smiling as she saw her eldest brother, Alucard standing in the doorway. He thought his eyes were playing tricks on him as he looked down at his sister. Realizing she was real, Alucard embraced his sister tightly and invited her in. After many long hours and many cups of wyne, Katerina was finally home again. Adirian invited his sister to come and meet his friends and his new family. Upon meeting these friends and family, she had meet many people that she began to care for deeply. She found out that her brother had decided to continue the Tepes family by making a clan of his own. Katerina was amazed at the size of her brother’s family and the respect that they had within the realm. Adirian wanted her to help him with the family, so he offered her the position as Co-Primogen of the Tepes along with him. The only clause that was put into the agreement was that they were to discuss any decisions that would affect the family and come to an agreement about them. Katerina wanting to belong with her family agreed. The years continued to past and Katerina finally realized that this family was becoming just like the family her father wanted to build, but she never spoke of this thought to anyone.
With the family doing well and her friends doing fine, Katerina began to think to herself about her future. While deep in thought one eve at the tavern, a small child stumbled through the doors. This child was covered with filth and had an order even a pig would despise. Not noticing the child because of her mind wandering, Katerina never noticed the little girl when she bumped into her. As I watched the two closely within this large room filled with all kinds of creatures, a thought of resemblance crossed my mind. As I looked at this child I saw Katerina, when she was that age, just a little bit. Katerina allowing her mind to return to her finally noticed the small out of place child. Walking to her, she leaned down and smiled to the little one. A very large man came up to the child and scooped her into his arms, carrying her away from Katerina and out the door. A few nights later, the same child was back in the tavern when Katerina entered. Smiling at the child, seeing that she was clean and taken care of, Katerina walked to her and introduced herself to the little one. Time passed on as the two talked and as I watched I noticed the child becoming more and more like Katerina. From that day on Dominique was always at her side and was always under foot. Katerina took Dominique under her wing as her niece and all others knew her to be a young Katerina in training.
Then one eve brought all of the past rushing back to Katerina. She got a message while she was at her home to go to the Tower of High Sorcery. Frantic and worried, for she didn’t know what was going on and her senses telling her something was wrong. Katerina used her vampirism for the first time; she traveled quickly to get to the Tower. Entering the tower a huge wave of despair flooded over her, for lying in a ball of pain and agony was Dominique. She was surrounded by mages in different colored robes and they looked to be trying to heal her. Standing in the dark shadows of the Tower Katerina, feeling as if her hands were tied from helping another person she loved, prayed for the first time ever in her life. Feeling a growing ache within her that she felt only once before in her entire lifetime. A single tear fell from her steel blue eyes as she watched Dominique, her fists balled at her side, and her pulse beginning to race. Katerina’s facial expressions were unable to be read, but all her mind was seeing was Lisa’s death again. She watched closely as Morath of the Red Robe was putting everything he could possible could into healing her niece, slowly Dominique began to regain color and her features were no longer contorted. Katerina’s eyes started to brighten as she looked at her niece being saved from a grueling death. From that day onward Katerina helped any member of the Conclave that needed it.
Many years later as fate would have it, after becoming close to Morath and the other Robes. Katerina and Morath were married on the 12th day of May the year 1999. She finally realized what it was to love and to be loved with an honesty so pure that it was blinding. Morath did everything in his power for her, which nothing had to be given because she still owed him much more for healing her niece Dominique. Everyday they were together was a surprise for her and a learning experience, for she did not know what this feeling was that was consuming her. Morath brightened her life, gave her roses as tokens of love everyday, and handed the world to her on a golden platter. She knew that she was blessed, the day that Morath said, “I do.” Not only was she gifted with a loving husband, but she also became a mother on her wedding day, for Morath had a daughter whose name was Ellisande. Katerina saw certain greatness within Elli, but her being a young girl Katerina knew Elli didn't see that greatness yet.
Morath and Katerina were constantly busy with friends, family and their work, that time together was precious and hard to find. One dark misty eve as they were sitting in the tavern talking of their days, a little girl approached their table. Katerina looked at the child and smiled realizing that she was blessed a second time with the grace of a lost child. Looking to her husband with a silent question in her eyes, and upon receiving the answer from Morath, Katerina scooped the little girl into her arms and held onto her tightly. They all began to learn more about each other. They found out that the child was an orphan and that she had no one besides an Uncle that couldn’t give her a true family. During their talk Katerina asked the little girl, named Cawi, if she would like a family. While she asked this, Katerina looked to Morath over the child’s head pleading to him with her eyes. Morath gave her a nod with a smile upon his face. Cawi, that eve, became a part of the Soulbane family where she remains to this day. Growing up in a family of love, understanding, and honesty.
Knowing that she had to contend to the Tepes family, Katerina returned to Tepes Keep only to find out that Adirian decided that it was time to set forth on a journey. He decided it was time to leave the family again for matters of greater importance. Upon his leaving he showed his true belief of his sister’s ability to take care of their family. Adirian decided to hand his Primogenship over to another member of the Tepes family. Thinking that Katerina was incapable of taking care of her family while he was away. Hearing this news caused her to rebuild that wall of hate and distrust back up around her heart. She went to the new Co-Primogen and denounced her title to him. Saying that the lack of faith within the family was not something she wanted to relive and that she was leaving the family. There was nothing that would change her mind, for a betrayal was something that she deemed unforgivable. So she left the realm that she use to call home to live within the warm walls of Soulbane Manor. Loving the Tepes as much as she could, she kept a close eye on them at a great distance. One day she heard of the disappearance of her sister-in-law Harmony Tepes and her beloved niece Jade Tepes. Frantic again about losing someone close to her, Katerina put out a search for them trying to get any answers that she could. Then the thing that Katerina wished she would never have to witness again happened. She had the honor of knowing what her father felt those many hundred years ago. Katerina was attacked by a fellow member of the Tepes for a misunderstanding about her family. The rage building within her caused her to retaliate, with her friends standing at her side and her husband standing beside her, Katerina decided that it was finally time to cut all ties with her past family. The betrayal against her was dealt with and she finally allowed others to see her true self when it comes to protecting herself and her united force of friends and family.
Now Katerina is living with her two adorable daughters, her beautiful niece Dominique, and her loving husband in Soulbane Manor. Her friends and family mean the world to her and she will protect them whatever the cost to her. Take this scribe's word when I say, “Do not underestimate the power that Katerina holds, for she can surprise even the greatest being. She holds trust and honor high within her life. For someone to betray that trust and honor, is a person that has crossed the line with Katerina. For that line will be the demise of that persons life.” They, Katerina and Morath, have built great relationships with their friends and they hold them dear to their hearts. They have lost friends to the battle of the fight, the sword of another, the magick of a being, or to the immortal beast within themselves, and those friends and family will be greatly missed. For those friends live within Katerina and Morath everyday that they walk this earth.
Now you know what there is to know about Katerina Tepes Soulbane, but do not think you know it all, for she still had many more trials and tribulations to live with in this realm she now calls home.
