The Harrier was the first VSTOL (Vertical/Short Take-Off-Landing) combat aircraft. Designed by British Aerospace, the basic requirements meant that it should be able to take-off and land from improvised sites, rather than from open and vulnerable airfields. Now in the GR mk7 variant, the Harrier now has updated avionics and a more powerful engine. The Navy Sea Harrier was a redesigned version of the ground attack aircraft designed to be a fleet defence aircraft. This proved its worthiness in the Falklands where Harriers scored 30 argentine air kills to no loss. The US Marine Corps has also adopted a ground support variant.
