The Eurofighter "Typhoon" is set to fill the RAFs air defence gap. Although still is the testing stage, around 250 have been ordered with the first operational squadron due around 2002/03. Although not a revolutionary loking as its US counterpart, the F-22, it is still a highly advanced design utilising a carbon fibre composite structure designed for low observability. It will also be equipped with a multi-target engagement capability which allows it to track, identify and destroy several targets at one time. It will undoubtedly be one of the most advanced and capable fighters in the world for some time to come.
