Nicholls State University is a coeducational and tax-supported college serving south central Louisiana. Nicholls is located in Thibodaux, Louisiana is named after former Luisiana govenor and Chief Justice for the Louisiana Supreme Court, Francis T. Nicholls. Francis Redding Tillou Nicholls was born on August 20, 1834, graduated from West Point, and practiced law in South Louisiana prior to his political career. He was nominated for govenor in 1876 and after his second tenure as govenor he was named chief justice to the Louisiana Supreme Court. After a long term as chief justice, Nicholls retired to his home in Thibodaux and died in 1912. Nicholls State opened its doors on September 23, 1948, as Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University. After eight years of education the Louisiana legislature decided to separate Nicholls from Louisiana State University. Therefore, in September of 1956, Nicholls reopened as Francis T. Nicholls State College. Then in 1970 the Louistana legislature renamed the college Nicholls State University.
