Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana by Mary Lou Allison Little and six teachers. The charter members are the Founders of Sigma Gamma Rho.The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha Chapter at Butler University.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, in a nonprofit, collegiate organization with foci on community service. Its purpose is expressed in its slogan "Greater Service, Greater Progress." It gives leadership, service and resources toward removing barriers and inequalities so that all peoples of America, especially of our Black Community, may develop their potential and exercise full citizenship.
National ProgramsBig Book Bag is a program to get supplies to needy school children.Mwanamugimu Essay Contest is designed to help young people to develop their research and writing skills while they learn about historical and contemporary development of Africa.
Wee Savers is to teach children about personal finance and money management through activities such as seminars and trips to financial institutions.
Judie Davis Marrow Recruitment Program focus on donor recruitment drives and educating the African American community about the importance of donating bone marrow.
Rejesta V. Perry Birthright Program provides assistance for infants and children born to mothers who are substance abusers that have AIDS and are HIV positive.
Habitat for Humanity International is a joint partnership that builds low income hosing in various cities.
Project for Africa contributes funds to Africare to be used to buy grain grinders for African farmers who are primarily women.
