One thing is for sure that when Auburn takes on LSU, it's going to be a shoot-out until the bitter end. Auburn got a much needed lead when they struck early with a pair of Dameyune Craig touchdown tosses. LSU’s only answer was a Cecil Collins 3 yard run. At half-time the score had been evened at 21-21, courtesy of a Herb Tyler 1 yard stretch over the line and into the end zone. The other score would come on a Tyler pass to Nemesis Bates for 38 yards. Bates accented the score by diving into the end zone. Because all the Auburn defenders had been beaten and had no chance at stopping Bates, a celebration penalty was called. With the second half still to play, Tiger fans could hardly concentrate on the tunes of the Golden Band from Tigerland and the bodaciously scrumptious Golden Girls. Who’s to know what kind of a roller-coaster ride these to rivals have in store for us. As expected, the game got tighter and entertaining as the second half played out. After Mark Roman nearly intercepted a pass deep in LSU territory, Auburn took the lead with a 34 yard field goal. In the fourth quarter Collins put LSU ahead on an amazing 42 yard scamper. With LSU leading 28-24, a victory seemed in hand. Late in the fourth LSU had the ball and was faced with a 3rd down with 2 yards to go. Coach DiNardo sent in a roll-out pass that was intended to be a quarter back keeper. But instead of running for the first down to keep the drive alive, Herb Tyler passed the ball incomplete. Chad Kessler then punted the ball into the end zone for a touchback. Auburn took the ball from their own 20 and put together a drive. Despite some questionable calls, LSU’s defense attempted a goal line stand that was abruptly broken up by a 1 yard Auburn score. With only 30 seconds to go LSU was unable to get any more points on the board. The loss was a devastating one for LSU, only intensifying the annual saga football fans have come to know as the LSU-Auburn game.
