This is the procedure I use for a fresh installation of Windows 98 on my
computers at home. I have used this procedure on systems that I have built as
well as systems that I have purchased and systems that have proprietary software
if you want to take this proprietary software off such as Hewlett Packard and
Packard Bell systems. Be sure and type these syntax's exactly as shown and do
not use the quotation marks. They are used only in my text so as you may distinguish
the syntax from the rest of the text. To start you will need a WIN98 start-up disk. You can download it from the link below. You will also need your Win98 Cd.
1. First acquire a win98 start-up disk and copy a format.exe file from the windows
command folder to the disk.(or download from this site as I have already copied it to the zip file) This will allow you to format your drive
2.Insert the startup disk into your floppy drive and start the computer. When the
screen is at the options screen hit "shift & F5. This will give you an A:\
command prompt. At the command prompt type "format c: /s" . This will
format your drive and load the system files on the drive.
3. Once your PC has finished the formatting process it will ask you label the
volume.I never label the volume as you can do this from within Windows. To
not label the volume just leave it blank and hit the Enter key.
4. Now reboot your pc to the start-up disk and at the menu choose "start with
CDROM Support". This will load a virtual drive that has the needed files to
Load the operating system.
5. Now Put the Win98 CD in the drive and at the command prompt type D: and hit the enter
key. If it returns an "Invalid Drive" Try E: or G: or so forth until it finds the
correct drive.
6. At the D: prompt(or which letter was assigned to the drive) type "setup"and
follow the onscreen prompts to finish loading windows
