Stephen is with the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department. He was the Volunteer Association's Vice President, and is also a Captain. He has taken classes to become a fire ground leader and Incident Commander.

In April 1999 Steve started working for National Fire Fighter servicing fire extinguishers up and down the Oregon Coast, from Newport to Brookings.
