Baton Rouge is the capitol of Louisiana and is home to the IC and KCS railroads. The Union Pacific (formally the MP) is located across the Mississippi River (on the west bank) in Port Allen with a yard in Addis, LA. Addis can be reached by following LA-1 south or downriver from Port Allen. The UP's Livonia yard is located about 30 miles west of Baton Rouge and off of highway US-190. Like the New Orleans area, Baton Rouge has its version of the Huey P. Long railroad bridge, but their bridge is a lot smaller and only single track. The KCS and the UP use this bridge that is located north or upriver from the downtown area.

This morning shot of KCS train 55 has KCS 689 leading a steady stream of boxcars over the Baton Rouge Huey P. Long bridge into Baton Rouge. The train will eventually arrive in New Orleans later that same Nov 29, 1992 day. The highway in the foreground is US-190 and the tracks that cross from left to right are the IC's. The north end of the IC yard and the hugh Exxon refinery are out of the picture and off to the left.

Back on Nov 12, 1995 the IC hosted a "Family Day" where the IC business train and a SD-70 were showcased for employees, their families, and the public to view. The Baton Rouge yard tower is in the background.

The UP maintains a nice size yard in the town of Addis, LA across the river from Baton Rouge. It has been rumored for quite some time now that the yard would be shutdown or turned over to a local plastic pellets company, Dow Chemical, and used by them as a storage yard for the large amount of centerflow hopper traffic they generate. The "River Job" has just returned from Port Allen and is making a 180 degree turn back to the north as it returns to the yard on one leg of the wye in this Sept 23, 1996 photo. The "local" caboose is the former MP 13563.

Lots of traffic runs on the UP from the Livonia yard to New Orleans. On Jan 22, 1994 the UP business train is seen here passing through the community of White Castle, LA on its way to Avondale, LA. The highway in the background is LA-1 that parallels the tracks and the river between Port Allen, all the way to Donaldsonville. The tracks eventually leave the highway around Donaldsonville as they pass through the middle of sugar cane country. Highway LA-1 also continues north all the way to Alexandria, LA. I guess you have noticed the scratch from end to end on this shot, well I had a poster print made and the negative came back like this shot - scratched. This is a prime example why you should shoot more than one image of something important. Luckily I did.
