G U I L T
Part One
by SkyLightning Star
The castle was dark. Nothing stirred in the black
hallways.At two in the
morning, nobody was awake.
Except one.
A black-clothed figure slipped in the kitchen window.
It looked around
warily bfore landing noiselessly on the tiled floor. Glancing around
again,
the figure shouldered a small black bag. It stole to the door and quietly
slipped away.
The person darted lightly through numerous hallways, tiptoeing
past
closed doors. It was about to turn the corner when it tripped over
a piece
of wire Hunk had carelessly left lying around earlier. The person fell
hard
on the ground. A black cap slid off its head, revealing long, straight
black
hair. "Shit!" the woman cursed softly. Hoping she hadn't woken anyone,
she
strode gracefully to a large door. The woman deftly typed a code on
the
security pad, glancing around for signs of movement as she did so.
To her
horror, the door beeped loudly as it slid open noisily. Swearing under
her
breath, she silently went inside. The door slid shut after her. Grinning
craftily, the woman unsheathed a flashlight and clicked it on. She
swung it
around, the beam revealing a huge room. But only the five Lions there
were
of interest to her. Whistling, she crept into the nearest one and bagan
her
work. She deftly began rearranging a few wires. A few minutes later,
she
stole quietly out of the Lion.
The woman repeated this procedure on the next three
Lions. After
finishing the fourth, ahe silently approached the last one. She glared
at
the robotic creature angrily. "You ruined my life." she murmured softly.
"Now I'm going to destroy you." A maniac smile spread across the woman's
delicate features. Licking her lips in anticipation, she entered the
Lion
and started working. A fine sweat had broken on her pale brow when
she
replaced the cover. An evil grin wreathed her face as she slipped out
of the
Lion. Crafty light glinted in her cold, icy grey eyes. A grim cackle
escaped
her white lips as she turned to leave. Before she reached the door,
she
turned and faced the Lions. "It's a foolproof plan." she told them
in a
smooth, evil voice."When the bomb goes off in the Lion, none of the
others
will be able to help. I fixed it so the controls would freeze. The
one who
destroyed my life will fall to his death, and his wretched robot with
him!
Nobody messes with Cat Delice!" Satisfied with her speech,Cat slipped
out of
the castle, laughing as she went. "Nobody messes with Cat- and lives!"

Later that morning, the Voltron Force was unaware of earlier
happenings as
they prepared for their six-thirty practice. As usual, Hunk was stuffing
himself with pancakes with pancakes stolen from the kitchen. Allura
was
brushing her long blond hair, Pidge was reading, and Keith was conversing
with Coran about some new battle strategies. Lance, however, was unusually
silent. He seemed lost in thought as he leaned against the wall. The
pilot
usually complained nonstop about the early time, so it was quite odd
he had
nothing to say. "All right team, let's do it." Keith announced suddenly.
Allura and Pidge strode to their entrances, while Hunk stuffed the
remaining
pancakes down before running to his own.
Keith's exasperated voice startled Lance out of his thoughts.
"Wake up,
buddy. I hope you were thinking about that new strategy we're going
to try
today." he said sharply. Lance still seemed far away. "Oh yeah. Whatever,
Keith." The captain sighed and walked away. Probably Lance was trying
out a
new way of complaining. Keith shook his head in disgust as he disappeared
through his entrance. After a moment, Lance followed.
************************************************************************
Lance had a bad feeling about the practice. Something wasn't
right, and he
couldn't figure out what it was. Dread collected in his stomach as
he
spiraled down to his Lion. As he burst into the air aboard the Red,
Keith's
voice sounded over the commlink, berating him. "Lance, what in hell
took you
so damn long? We need to practice! You don't know when a attack is
going to
come, and we need to learn that new maneuver. You can't just take your
sweet
time getting here!" Lance quickly interrupted before Keith really got
started."I think I get the point."
Keith's sigh was loud. "Quit acting like a spoiled brat, Lance.
I don't
know what side of the bed you woke up on this morning, but it sure
was the
wrong one." With that, Keith turned the Black and began heading for
the
training field. Hunk and Allura quickly flew after him. Pidge stayed
with
Lance. "Don't worry, Lance. He's really on edge with all the new stuff
Coran's been throwing at him. He just picked you to blow up at. He
didn't
mean it." the younger pilot reassured. Lance's reply was flat. "Right."
Pidge sighed. "Lance, is something wrong? You've been really quiet
today."
His voice held a note of concern. Lance hesitated. "Something's wrong,
Pidge. I feel like something very bad is going to happen." Pidge was
concerned. Lance had always had extraordinary intuition, and he was
usually
correct. "Like what?" Pidge pressed. Lance's tone was uncertain. "I
don't
know. Something."
Suddenly Keith's voice blared angrily over their commlinks.
"Jesus people!
Both of you get here NOW!" The two pilots sensed the fury in Keith's
tone.
Without a word, Lance increased his speed. Mentally cursing, Pidge
followed.
Lance's feelings worried him.He had to clear those thoughts from his
mind as
he landed in front of Keith, beside Lance.
Their leader's voice was tight. "Okay guys, start our regular
drills.
Lance, stay here- I want a word with you." The lucky three quickly
flew off.
Lance looked down as Keith began. "Lance, I don't know what is with
you
today. You're slowing everyone down. Sometimes, when you're like this,
I
don't know if I should even keep you on the team." Lance was stunned
by the
harsh words. Keith had never said anything like that to him before.
"Come
with me. I'm going to show you that new strategy." the captain said
flatly.
The two went to the far edge of the field, out of sight of the other
three.
Keith flew upward, perparing to demonstrate, when suddenly Black Lion
rocked
with a internal explosion.
Keith frantically grabbed the controls as warning lights
flashed. He
dimly felt the Lion falling. The controls were unresponsive as the
Lion
picked up speed on its deadly plummet. "Lance! LANCE!" But there was
only
silence to accompany him as the Black collided with the earth. Keith
was
enveloped in brief agony before he drifted into merciful, painless
darkness.
*************************************************************************
Lance was stunned. "Keith!" he shouted again into the
commlink. The Black
Lion was still, a mess of smashed metal. When the explosion happened,
Lance's controls had frozen. The Red Lion was unresponsive to his commands.
Frustrated, Lance slipped out of the robot and sprinted towared his
friend.
His lungs burned as he pushed himself on. Lance skidded to a stop at
the
edge of the wreckage. The pilot was dimly aware of the other three
Lions
landing next to the Red as he fought his way through to Keith. Allura's
shouts cut the air as she ordered Hunk to call a med team. Pidge and
the
princess ran to Lance's side. Allura's blue eyes were shopcked as she
aided
Lance in moving a metal plate. "What the heck happened?" Pidge cried,
behind
them. "Don't know..he just fell." Lance grunted as he heaved the plate
aside. The trio could hear the med vehicle dashing across the vast
field
toward them. Lance forced his lean frame through the small opening
to the
cockpit. Lance's stomach coiled at the sight of Keith's broken body.
His
dark eyes were closed, and his chest moved up and down only faintly.
Lance's
deft fingers tore away the safety straps holding him in the seat. Allura's
anxious voice drifted down to him. "Lance, bring him here. the med
team
can't climb down there." Worry seeped through her tone as she tried
to
steady it.
The Red pilot carefully lifted his leader, cradling his
limp form gently
as he pushed him up the small, jagged opening. Hunk's large hands reached
down to take him. Lance could hear the princess' gasp of horror, and
Dr.
Gorma's businesslike tone. A knot of guilt formed in his gut. He should
have
done something. But his controls were frozen-why? Why right then?
Suddenly, Lance realized Hunk was leaning down the opening.
"you coming?"
he asked softly, worry shining in his gaze. Lance nodded numbly, and
let the
large man pull him up. as the pilot emerged into the bright morning
sun,
Allura's hands grabbed him. "Lance, what the hell happened?" Lance
averted
his gaze as he replied, "I honestly don't know, Allura. He just fell."
The
princess'gaze hardened. "Why didn't you help?" she asked tightly. Lance
drew
back from her tight grip. "My controls froze." he answered truthfully.
Allura's sapphire eyes filled with doubt. Angrily, Lance pulled wawy
and
started heading toward the Red Lion. He could hear the others follow
at a
distance. As he pulled himself into his Lion, a small tear slid down
his
face. The pilot quickly wiped it away before heading at high speed
to the
castle.
Not far away, a pair of icy grey eyes watched the scene
with delight.
"Surely the leader will die. It only adds to my triumph that they suspect
the second-in-command of doing it!" Cat grinned evilly as she saw the
last
three leave. "Haha! Nobody messes with Cat and lives!"
