You remind me of the babe
I saw my baby, crying hard as babe could cry
CHORUS
I saw my baby, trying hard as babe could try
CHORUS
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance) (x4)
Put that baby spell on me (ooh)
You remind me of the babe
Dance magic, dance, ooh ooh ooh
What kind of magic spell to use?
Dance magic, dance
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Music and Lyrics By David Bowie
From the Labyrinth Movie Soundtrack, 1986
What babe? The babe with the power
What power? Power of voodoo
Who do? You do
Do what? Remind me of the babe
What could I do?
My baby's love had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew:
What kind of magic spell to use?
Slime and snails
Or puppy dogs' tails
Thunder or lightning
Then baby said
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Put that baby spell on me
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free
What could I do?
My baby's fun had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump) (x2)
What babe? The babe with the power
What power? Power of voodoo
Who do? You do
Do what? Remind me of the babe
Dance magic, dance magic, ooh ooh ooh
Dance magic
Slime and snails
Or puppy dogs' tails
Thunder or lightning
Something frightening
Dance magic, dance
Put that baby spell on me
Jump magic, jump
Jump magic, jump
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby make him free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance
Slap that slap that baby make him free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance) (repeat ad-lib)
Did you know that .....
The lyric from Magic Dance that starts with "You remind me of the ..." comes from a traditional spoken nursery game for children. And typical of such games there are different versions that use "voodoo" "whodoo" and "hoodoo", but all refer to a "man". Bowie substituted it with "babe"! A version of this chant appears in the old Cary Grant movie "The Bachelor and the Bobysoxer" and it goes:
"You remind me of a man"
"What man?"
"The man with the power"
"What power?"
"The power of whodo"
"Whodo?"
"You do."
In the Mel Brooks' movie "Blazing Saddles", Hedley Lamarr tells us - "Go do that voodoo that you do!"
