Newport, Oregon

back home

13 August 2004 - 18 August 2004

So, my dad took a promotion to move to Newport, Oregon...a tiny little touristy town on the Left Coast.  Having been there since November, I figured I'd jet up for a week to see him.  For company, my friend of 11 years, Emery Zachry, tagged along.  Newport's a neat little town where everyone either works at a paper mill (huge timber industry, good for my Dad's chemical/water treatment business), or they're in the commercial fishing trade.  No one has air conditioning because it rarely gets above 80 degrees in the middle of summer.  And...I didn't exactly pack well...so while I had 10 different tee-shirts, I only had 2 long sleeve shirts and a couple of fleece pullovers for the nighttime...so it looks like all these pics were all in two days b/c I'm always in a blue oxford.  Yikes.

So...what'd we do?  Well...we went on a whale watching expedition for a few hours out in the Pacific, toured the Oregon State University Aquarium, toured several lighthouses, the Old Dutchman winery, saw some beaches, drove on the beaches (in Lincoln City, just a few miles North of Newport where Brad Pitt and Jenn Anniston have a house...FYI), played in tide pools, saw the famous Spruce Goose (Howard Hughes huge plane that he built for the US Armed Forces, only to have World War II end before its completion, he finished building it, flew it once, and then kept it docked and read at a cost of $1,000,000/year until his death in the 1970s), and drove to Northern California to see the northern end of the Redwood Forest.

Brett and Dad at the Redwood Forest.JPG (123348 bytes) Me and Dad in front of one of the Redwoods...I was bored...I figured I'd climb...I didn't get to far. Up-close of me climbing...and...that's about 10 feet off the ground...and that's about as far as I got...

Redwood Tree.JPG (107304 bytes) Another Redwood...yeah...after awhile, all trees look the same... Me among the redwoods...wandering Brett walking in the Redwood Forest.JPG (123423 bytes)
Dad driving to Redwood Forest.JPG (88655 bytes) Dad driving us to North California, about 150 miles or so away, but it took over 4 hours one way because its all coast line and our average speed was about 50...look at the pic from the Navigation System's screen just to see how curvy the road is... And here's the Navi System...61 miles from Northern California, and its estimated time for us was almost 2 hours...we thought it was bunk, but it was dead on accurate...even in a Benz with a stabilizing traction system, we couldn't handle the roads much more than the posted speeds... Nav System-going to Redwood.JPG (60627 bytes)
Us at the Redwood in the Mercedes.JPG (104386 bytes) Me and Emery in the Benz at the Redwood...we were watching for Elk I think... Okay...so I like building dams in creeks with big smooth rocks...so sue me...its fun... Me still playing with the creek.JPG (130374 bytes)
Brett building a dam.JPG (109344 bytes) Playing with the dam some more... And a last shot of me and my dam...I like to think I was doing something harmful to the ecosystem...like...5 years from now the erosion caused by my routing the water down one path will destroy some 5,000,000 year old tree which gets hit by lightening as its falling and starts a huge forest fire...or something like that.... Brett playing in the creek.JPG (136806 bytes)
Brett and Dad on beach at Heceda Head.JPG (70223 bytes) Me and Dad on the eroding beach...look to the bottom of this page for a Windows Media video of how quickly this sad was just eating away.  That bit about Louisiana losing a football field of coastline 10-fold a day?  Watch this and believe its possible. Me and Emery at a lookout point above Heceda Head, which is where the pic to the left of this took place... Brett and Emery-Heceda Head Lighthouse maybe.JPG (82711 bytes)
Overlooking Heceda Head-Some kinda of Point.JPG (116059 bytes) Some other big lookout point...I can't think of what its called....something starts with a "P"...but its not Pontification or Proximity or Procrastination...so I'm not sure... Me at Heceda Head Lighthouse Me at the top of Heceda Head.JPG (36421 bytes)

Brett and Dad-backscratch on the cold night at beach near house.JPG (20449 bytes) It was cold...and I had an itch...so my Dad scratched so I wouldn't have to take my hands out of my pockets.  What are Dads for?  Emery thought it was funny so she snapped this... Guess what this is.  Yup...its water hitting rocks.  Kinda cool to watch...I've got about 75 different pics of this happening...its not that interesting... Water hitting rocks at Yaquina Bay.JPG (52176 bytes)
Brett and Emery on the Rocks.JPG (41589 bytes) Me and Emery at Lincoln Beach...all those black things are mollusks...and its against the law to stand on them...Whoops. Ocean Sunset.JPG (51070 bytes) Sunset...yeah...you knew that...sometimes I think Heaven would be great if it was just a big picnic where we could talk and watch the sunset and sunrise over and over again... Yaquina Head Lighthouse at dusk as seen from the beach across from Dad's house... Yaquina Lighthouse at Dusk.JPG (34738 bytes)
Spruce Goose Wing.JPG (71162 bytes) Spruce Goose portside wing...HUGE plane.... For comparison, the tail fin of the Spruce with a WWII fighter plane's full wingspan directly behind it...yeah...like I said before...HUGE plane Spruce Goose for Comparison.JPG (73754 bytes)
Inside of Spruce Goose.JPG (32634 bytes) Inside the Spruce Goose...looking down its tail...kinda cool...things been around since 1941...few once...sat in a dock for 30 years...almost got neglected...then saved and stuck in the middle of a museum in a vineyard in the middle of Oregon...odd journey if you ask me Okay...this was funny.  You always hear jokes about old men in shorts with black shoes and knee socks...but you never really believe its possible that someone could have style THAT bad, right?  Well we saw this guy next to us waiting to go  tour a lighthouse at Yaquina Bay, and Em snapped a picture...hill-air-ee-us.  It was all we could do to keep from laughing... Funny Shoes and Socks.JPG (49733 bytes)
