I love to listen to music as I write and here are some of my biggest influences. Some are more obvious than others.

Independents.Net

The Independents are a horror punk/ska band & are friends of mine. They were managed by the late great Joey Ramone (of the Ramones) & have a sound you just don’t get on the radio. They are on tour now & probably coming soon to a town near you.

SpinDoctors.com

The Spin Doctors are urban poets on the level of Blues Traveler. They fill their lyrics with imagery, Shakespeare and mythology.

Here is a brief example that I have used. Pigeons vs Doves. Pigeons are the lowest beggar in the city they are also a nuisance while a dove is a symbol of peace & beauty. However if one isn’t careful it is possible to mistake a pigeon for a dove.Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are messengers who carried their own execution orders.

Here are the lyrics to How Could You Want Him when You know You Could Have Me?

I’m quite contented to take my chances

Against the Guildensterns & Rosencrantses

It’s a matter of Cain & Abel

And I can feel your knee underneath the table

He doesn’t dangle by the seraphim

He only wants a pretty face by him so

How could you want him when you know you could have me? See the pigeons peck & peck to pay the dues

They peck a little extra to resole their shoes

He’s with the pigeons (lowest beggar or angel) pecking crumbs

I’m on my deathbed bleeding with the cherubim (small angels of the heart, higher than pigeons)

He doesn’t dangle by the seraphim (highest choir of angels)

He only wants a pretty face by him so

How could you want him when you know you could have me?

Ferocious angels send me falling stars

But I know just how dangerous wishes are

Ferocious angels watch me come and go

But I’m not too smart to go barging off of roof tops, though

Sit out September on the window sill

’cause you can’t drink wine from a two dollar bill

Saint Christopher lives on the end of a quill

Leave him a diamond in your last will

He doesn’t dangle by the seraphim

He only wants a pretty face by him so

How could you want him when you know you could have me?

…..Spin Doctors Pockets Full of Kryptonite

This song has not appeared in Pride & Prejudice but it was my inspiration behind writing a Sesshomaru story. These lyrics reminds me of him. Don’t know why but it could be the eye makeup and gender roles reference. Laid by Matt Nathanson is the opening song of American Pie III AKA American Wedding.

Laid…by Matt Nathanson

This bed is on fire with passion and love. The neighbors complain about the noises above. But she only comes when she’s on top.

My therapist said not to see you no more. She said you’re like a disease without any cure. She said I’m so obsessed that I’ll become a bore…

Ah you think you’re so pretty…..

Caught your hand inside the till. Slammed your fingers in the door. Bought the kitchen knives and skewers. Dresses me up in women’s clothes. Messed around with gender roles. Dye my eyes and call me pretty

Moved out of the house so you moved next door. I locked you out you cut a hole in the wall. I found you sleeping next to me I thought I was alone. You’re driving me crazy, when are you coming home?
