A tribute to my sweet daughter, Sarah Mae
You were born a daughter.
Your children are not your children.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
You are the bows from which your children as living
Let your bending in the Archer's hand be for gladness,
you looked up to your mother.
you looked up to your father.
you looked up to everyone...
you wanted to be a princess.
you wanted to own a horse.
you wanted your brother to be a horse.
you wanted to wear pink.
you never wanted to wear pink.
you wanted to be a veterinarian.
you wanted to be president.
you wanted to be the president's veterinarian.
you were picked last for the team.
you were the best one on the team.
you refused to be on the team.
you wanted to do well in algebra.
you hid during algebra.
you wanted boys notice you.
you were afraid the boys would notice you.
you started to get acne.
you started to get breasts.
you started to get acne that was bigger than your breasts.
you wouldn't wear a bra.
you couldn't wait to wear a bra.
you couldn't fit into a bra.
you didn't like the way you looked.
you didn't like the way your parents looked.
you didn't want to grow up.
you had your first best friend.
you had your first date.
you spent hours on the telephone.
you got kissed.
you got to kiss back.
you went to the prom.
you didn't go to the prom.
you went to the prom with the wrong person.
you spend hours on the telephone.
you fell in love.
you fell in love.
you fell in love.
you lost your best friend.
you lost your other best friend.
you really fell in love.
you became a steady girlfriend.
you became a significant other.
you became significant to yourself.
sooner or later, you start to take yourself seriously.
you know when you need a break.
you know when you need a rest.
you know what to get worked up about, and what to get rid of.
and you know when it's time to take care of yourself, for yourself.
to do something that makes you stronger, faster, more complete.
because you know it's never too late to live life.
and never too late to change one. JUST DO IT!!
- from The Prophet by Kahlil Gabran
They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself,
They come through you but not from you,
And they are with you yet they belong not to you
For they have their own thoughts.
for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams
You may strive to be like them
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with his might
that his arrows may go swift and far
for even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
Just for this morning
Just for this morning
Just for this morning,
Just for this morning
Just for this morning
Just for this afternoon
Just for this afternoon
Just for this afternoon
Just for this afternoon,
Just for this afternoon,
Just for this evening,
Just for this evening,
Just for this evening
Just for this evening
And tonight when you are sleeping safe and warm in your bed
I will think of the mothers and fathers
I will remember the parents who sit by hospital beds,
I will weep for those parent's whose children are suffering,
and .... this evening

(For Dhylan)
I am going to smile when I see your face, and laugh when I
feel like crying.
I will let you wake up softly in your flannel p.j.'s and
hold you until you are ready to stir.
I will let you choose what you want to wear, and I will say
how beautiful you are.
I will step over the laundry to pick you up, and take you
to the park to play
I will leave the dishes in the sink, and let you teach me
how to put your puzzle together.
I will unplug the telephone and keep the computer off, and
sit with you in the garden
blowing bubbles.
I will not yell once, not even a tiny grumble when you
scream and whine for the ice
cream truck
and I will buy you one, if he comes by.
I wont worry about what you are going to be when you grow
up,
I will simply love you, for the joy you bring me
I will let you help me make cookies,
and I wont stand over you. . . trying to 'fix things.
I will take you to McDonalds and buy us both a 'Happy Meal'
So you can have two toys.
I will hold you in my arms and tell you the story of how you
were born,
and how much we love you
I will let you splash in the bathtub,
and I wont get angry when you pour water over your sisters
head.
I will let you stay up late, while we sit on the porch swing
and count all the stars.
I will bring you glasses of water,
and snuggle beside you for hours, and miss my favorite t.v.
show.
who cry for the children they have lost.
Whose arms are empty, and whose tears never dry.
holding the hands of the little ones they love.
when I kneel down to pray
I will simply be grateful for all that I have
and not ask for anything...
except just one more day.
