Release of Lien dated May 27, 1818 concerning the December 29, 1817 purchase by John Close of a slave named Betsey from the estate of Michel Prudhomme


TRANSCRIPTION OF RELEASE OF LIEN
Release of Lien dated May 27, 1818

Know all men by these presents that where as on the twenty ninth day of December of the last year at the sale of the Estate of Michel Prudhomme deceased, John Close became the purchaser of a mulatto girl slave named Betsy aged about eighteen years – and whereas Michel Prudhomme & André Neraut being authorized by a power of Attorney executed by the widow & heirs of the said Estate, to collect all monies due to the same and to give receipts and sufficient discharges therefor [sic] do hereby acknowledge to have received from the said John Close the sum of seven hundred and twenty dollars, the full and entire amount of the purchase money for the above mentioned slave, and in consideration thereof has released and do hereby release the mortgage held on the same to secure the payment of the purchase money as aforesaid and forever acquits & discharges the said John Close therefrom, as well as the said slave from the effect or operation of the said lien as though it had never been made or executed. – In witness whereof the said Michel Prudhome & André Neraut have here-unto signed in presence of the subscribing witnesses and before George King, Parish Judge in and for the Parish of Saint Landry at Opelousas as this twenty seventh day of May one thousand eight hundred and eighteen.
