Then and Now

"Breath of Life" - by one of our
cousins, noted South Louisiana artist
Dawn Thibodeaux
- is the best representation I have seen of
the spirit that is bringing us back together.

"Our ancestors flow like many streams to
make a mighty river. See their spirits in
the looking glass. You have seen their
Spirit forever... You belong to the nation
of our ancestors, a nation among many nations.
Now we are strong because we are one."

from "'Spirit', a journey in dance drums and song"
Conceived and composed by Peter Buffet c.1998
Back Row Productions c.1999 PolyGram Video

There are many ways to represent the spirit
that is drawing the Kaskaskia back together. The
following poem is another way to express these emotions.

FOREVER FRIENDS
(Author: Anon.)

We are joined in a friendship
That time cannot sever
With bonds built by our ancestors
We remain friends forever

We are welded in spirit
Attached by our hearts
And fused by the feelings
That friendship emparts

We are tied by emotions
Connected by dreams
Reinforced by our hopes
Unified by extremes

No longer a function
of time or of space
Our friendship is a substance
That distance cannot displace

No matter how far we may be from each other
We pledge to continuously strive
To sense the full meaning
of Friendship Forever

The Wea Indian Tribe has been a friend to the Kaskaskia throughout history. Their descendants have compiled a number of resources that are invaluable to us and are nice enough to help us in our search for other descendants of the Kaskaskia Tribe and for our ancestors. Please visit their site and thank them for their kindness in helping us understand our identity.

Please write to the owner of the Randolph County, Illinois, site and tell her how much we appreciate her efforts on our behalf. She is one of the nicest ladies I have met online and has built a beautiful site that features our tribal history.

I have made web pages for my own Kaskaskia ancestors. Mamenthouensa is my 9-g-grandfather and was Chief of the Illini Confederation. His daughter, Marie Rouensa is the ancestor of many of the French Creole inhabitants of the Pointe Coupee and Avoyelles Parishes in Louisiana today.
