Peter Moore
Born: 1834
Son of Rebecca Moore
Initially, we had only the following census
record for Peter Moore:
1870 Census Morehouse Parish LA
Moore Peter 36 b. LA
Catherine 24 b. LA
Jefferson 8
John W. 2
However, it did not seem likely that
Peter Moore waited to marry until he
was past 30, so a search for another
marriage for him revealed that Peter
had first been married to Rebecca Parker,
step-daughter of his oldest brother, David
King Moore, by his first marriage to Mary
Parker. Thus, the family of Peter Moore
actually looks more like this:
Peter Moore b. 1834 Ouachita Parish, LA
1. Rebecca Parker b. 1837
(daughter of Mary Parker)
one daughter: Laura Moore
b. 1858 d. 1862
one son: Jefferson Davis b. 1862
(see below for descendants)
2. Frances Catherine McCauly b. 1846
one son: John W. b. 1868
Peter M. MOORE, a 26 year old resident of
Morehouse Parish, enrolled as a Private
in Captain Stevens' Morehouse Stars and
was transferred into Confederate service
on March 17, 1862 at Memphis, Tennessee.
PMM was present for duty from March 1862
until April 12, 1863 when he was left sick
at Jackson, Mississippi. He was absent sick
through the end of June 1863.
Returning to duty in July 1863, he was
present during the Atlanta Campaign in
1864. His last Confederate muster roll
record shows him present for duty on August
30, 1864 near Atlanta. He may have fought
at Franklin and Nashville in Tennessee in
late 1864, but the records of this episode
are absent from everyone's files. The
regiment was sent to North Carolina from
Mississippi in early 1865 where they fought
at Kinston and Bentonville in March 1865
and were surrendered at Greensboro, North
Carolina on April 26, 1865. The last muster
roll for the regiment is this surrender
roll. PMM was not listed, either as present
or accounted elsewhere, in these final
surrender rolls in North Carolina.
However, he was captured during the month
of April 1865 near Macon, Georgia by
Federal cavalry. Macon was a major
Confederate hospital complex and lay
along the route the 12th Louisiana had
taken to North Carolina. PMM may have
been left sick while en route to North
Carolina, or may have been furloughed
from camp at Tupelo, Mississippi in
January and attempted to catch up.
A large number of men furloughed from
the 12th Louisiana at Tupelo traveled
through Macon in March to reach the
regiment in North Carolina.
Peter Moore was a farmer. He died in
Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, in August,
1878, of Yellow Fever. He left his entire
estate to Jefferson Davis Moore, his son
by Rebecca Parker. Peter is buried in
Neiman Cemetery off of the Hamburg
Highway in a wooded area of Bastrop,
Louisiana.
