Born: 1822 Kentucky
Brought to Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, as
a child by his mother, Rebecca Moore.
This page is dedicated to the memory of
Murphy Zack Worley, grandson of
Phillip Moore through Phillip’s daughter
India Shirley Moore. The descriptions and
much of the commentary have been taken
from Murphy Zack Worley’s
"The Life of M.Z. Worley"
Murphy Zack's assessment of his
Grandpa Moore:
"...they never made them any better."
We have the following census report for Phillip Moore.
1870 Census Morehouse Parish LA
Moore, Phillip 49 b. KY
Mary 35 b. AL
Children:
Wallace 11
Annie 8
India (Shirley) 5
Emma 2
India Shirley Moore would later become
the second wife of Charles Alexander Worley.
Her first cousin, William Joseph Moore, son
of Phillip’s brother, David King Moore,
would marry her step-daughter and create
the relationships described on the Rebecca
Moore page of this web site.
We have the following information about
Phillip Moore from the recollections of
Murphy Zack Worley, son of Charles
Alexander Worley and India Shirley Moore:
Phillip Moore and Mary Glover lived on
Cooper Lake Road near Havely Hill,
Louisiana. Phillip Moore was a big man,
weighing about 200 pounds, and had a
long white beard.
According to Murphy Zack Worley,
Phillip Moore had two sons and
three daughters. However, Wallace
is the only son listed with the
family of Phillip Moore and Mary Glover.
Since Phillip was in his mid- to late 30s
before he married Mary Glover, it is not
unreasonable to speculate that there was
probably a first marriage for Phillip that
produced at least one son. According to
Murphy Zack Worley, the family knew
the older son existed, but never knew
anything about him. This leaves us
searching for a first marriage for Phillip,
as well as for a son born sometime between
1840 and 1858. There is a strong possibility
that a second Peter Moore, not the brother
of Phillip, discussed at the end of this
document, may be that missing son.
Investigation into census records
concerning this issue has begun.
The Other Peter Moore
According to the recollections of Murphy
Zack Worley, Phillip Moore had an older
son, but the grandchildren did not know
much about him. The Peter Moore, described
below, lived in Ward 2 of Morehouse Parish,
named his daughter Frances Eliza, and was
the right age to have been the missing son of
an earlier marriage for Phillip Moore. The odds
against two Peter Moores living in Ward 2 of
Morehouse Parish, one with a sister named
Eliza and one with a daughter named Frances
Eliza – and their not being related – are just too
great to ignore. We now suspect that the two
Peter Moores are uncle and nephew - one, the
known brother of Phillip Moore - the other,
the lost son of an earlier marriage of
Phillip Moore.
Known information about the second Peter:
From a history of the Day family by Doyle Day:
Martha Ann Day Moore Naff was the
6th child of Marshall Day. She was first
married to Peter Moore (PVT. 20th CO.
LA. CO. D C.S.A.) b:? In Ward 2,
Morehouse Parish, LA, d: 12/16/1863
(Captured near Jackson, MS on 7/14/1863
Died in Prisoner of War Camp at Camp
Morton, Ind. and is buried there. Their
anniversary was 10/1860 and their issue
was one girl: Frances Eliza "Fanny"
Moore who married John Henry Naff
(the son of Martha's second husband,
Jonathan Lamar Naff and his first wife
Hulda). This from 1942 research by Hattie
Naff Sugar (daughter of Jonathan Naff
and Hulda) and by research by Louise Naff
and her niece Marjor Day Huber.

Frances Eliza can be found on Lori Stephens’
